EMG question

Post by willow13 »

I have got the back off of my washburn that has emg 89's front and back cause I am going to try the 18Vmod, when I noticed how hot the battery is when the guitar is plugged in...is this normal??

when I did the 18V mod (adding another battery in series) both batteries got so hot that I couldn't touch them  can anyone offer me some advice on what might be going on
cheers

no idea if they're supposed to get hot or not, but the reaction sounds like a short circuit. what's the DC resistance of the pups, and what should they be according to the website?

Shouldn't get hot at all. Sounds like a polarity problem or undesired earthing.

I've got the 18volt mod in my LTD with EMG 81/89 combo and it's not hot. It was once, I've since rewired [multiple times in fact..] and it's not hot. Did you connect the second battery clip backwards in the series chain perhaps?

I don't think so....I did it the way an electrician told me to so I assume he's right. My main concern is the fact that it gets hot when it's the standard 9V, I brought the guitar with the P/Ups already installed, I might have to pull it apart and rewire it myself to make sure all is as it should be according to the emg web site

all electricians are wankers though... trust me. treble check the wiring!
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

Bad... you don't want the batts exploding all over the nice interior of your gat.
I assume it's bad wiring. you got a photo of the inside of the gat?
what about when the gat is unplugged? does it still get hot?
how many EMG's 1 or 2?

Depends, if you're playing in a Kiss tribute band, your guitar exploding in a shower of sparks would be considered a plus...

On a slight tangent...

I played the new Ibanez XPT700 yesterday (queer x-shaped deal) and it is fitted with DiMarzio D-Activator pickups. I'd never heard of them before and checked them out. They're supposed to sound like active EMGs without actually being active. Sound far fetched, but amazingly, they actually do have that EMG81 tone about them. Beats the hell out of exploding batteries ;)

What did you think of the Xiphos in general? On paper it sounds cool, but the price and the Indonesian manufacture kinda turned me off it in the end. Plus I heard it neck dives like a bitch. That V-blade they had out briefly was cool though.

Ahh, more guitars on the list to check out when we manage to get all the Chch forum guys together at some point. I actually think the shape is pretty cool, especially since it's a pointy and doesn't look like the other 90% of the Ibanez line up (RGs).
