Irony

Gilmour tones are largely generated from a Strat...edge tones I dunno..maybe some Strats in there.

Might be hard to get the tones in your head you speak of if you dont have the right guitar, or at least a guitar in the right ballpark?

Valid point. I'm aware of that, a strat is on the shopping list at some stage. BTW, I'm not quite so daft as to expect a gilmour tone from a low end gretsch and a VT20+.
But in the mean time, this thread was about amps and effects etc, so the references to the "direction of sound/tone" are still relevant for this exercise. If you'd like, you can pretend I have a strat if that makes it easier.

If I was going to start all over with 3kish, I'd probably try get:

HSS Radian guitar
Second hand Mesa Express head+2x12cab (or combo if you want something smaller).

If there was any money left over I'd look at grabbing a second hand Nova System, M9, G Major, or pedals. I'd definitely leave pedals last unless you really like effects, because its easy to save up a small chunk of money and progressively build a board.

There's so many ways to get where you want to go, I don't think you can go too far wrong. Every type of setup has its positives and negatives unless you are lucky enough to own it all.

You want to go Gilmour huh? Winning!!

A really good site with the pedals and effects he used for each album is
www.gilmourish.com

Some say chasing down Gilmours sound is akin to trying to find the Emerald City without a yellow brick road, a scarecrow, a tinman, and a cowardly lion
(some sort of reference to dark side of the rainbow in there)

Anyway good luck, and never settle for less than what you want

Did you have a link to that site Floyd?

Anyways, yeah. Gilmour has $50k worth of Strat, rack and amp. He probably owns the rights to the wizard of oz too....

Some might say you can get away with a bogner or a peavey bandit, doesn't matter once you're on stage, eh ;)
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

jeremyb wrote:If you like the idea of an Axe-FX then look at the Line6 Pod HD500, does the same kind of thing, but in a convenient floorboard, or theres a rack mounted pro version available now, ideally you want to pair it up with a power amp and a speaker cabinet, so for about $2500 you'd have a very powerful and flexible setup with all the amp tones and effects you could ever want :)
Unless you want a decent JCM800 tone.

I'm going to take that as a challenge Hamo, I know I've agreed in the past, but post up a track you think is the quintessential 800 tone and I will have a crack at emulating it :D

If I were starting with $3000 today I'd look for a nice old American Tele on Trademe, and a smaller wattage tube amp. A Blues Junior maybe. Something in the 15-20w range.

Pedals can wait (well, maybe one nice overdrive pedal to start - a TS clone or something like that). I'd also look to buy almost everything 2nd hand. I've almost always regretted buying new when I've seen what gear goes for on Trademe.

For me the joy in pedals is that they are relatively easy to accumulate over time compared to guitars. I think the building blocks of a nice amp and guitar are important to start with.

...I should say I have a Hot Rod Deluxe (the 2nd version).

The clean is great and it makes the amp good for taking pedals. The dirty channel is terrible, for anything other than really light gain, and even then, way to harsh and gritty for me. I've heard that version 3 of the HRD has a better drive channel though.

When the time comes to upgrade amps though, I'm definitely set on getting something a bit smaller. As someone mentioned, the HRD is really loud, much louder than I need it to be. Can't get close to natural breakup without having neighbors knocking on the door. I'm still thinking a DR Z Mazz 18... thought that would suck up most of your budget.

If you're happy with your guitar though... :D
