Starting from Scratch – A New Guitar Rig Needed

...I should say I have a Hot Rod Deluxe (the 2nd version).

The clean is great and it makes the amp good for taking pedals. The dirty channel is terrible, for anything other than really light gain, and even then, way to harsh and gritty for me. I've heard that version 3 of the HRD has a better drive channel though.

When the time comes to upgrade amps though, I'm definitely set on getting something a bit smaller. As someone mentioned, the HRD is really loud, much louder than I need it to be. Can't get close to natural breakup without having neighbors knocking on the door. I'm still thinking a DR Z Mazz 18... thought that would suck up most of your budget.

That is a good point. I guess all my ire is directed at the HD's JCM model rather than the unit's inability to do that tone. Go on and prove me wrong JB, you might save me a fortune on gear.

Maybe what I'm really after is a JCM800 pushed with a Boss SD-1 and featuring a Boss Super Chorus...

I'd buy X guitar

Having the appropriate guitar to get a particular sound applies regardless of whether I go with

• amp+pedals
  amp that does the lot
  amp+multieffects

hence I deliberately left the guitar out of this topic so as to not get side tracked. The point of this exersise was about (if possible) short cutting to something close to my ideal and future proofing my amp & effects rig now, rather than going through 5 different amps and two dozen pedals over the next 3 years and throwing away several thousand dollars in the process.
