I have been working with this (coincidentally) for a little while now, particularly since I posted this thread. I decided that the way I was doing the RHCP intro simply would never work out so I did change the way I fretted the parts that didn't work & found new ways which are much more reliable! It's certainly not 100%, however, before I would sit down & pretty much guarantee I would stuff it up, now I can sit down and I am fairly confident of doing it 90% correct if not 100% correct first time!B45-12 wrote:I feel there is a mental component to all this that works like

My suggestion is break the cycle at about no's 10-20 as per the above posted ideas, BUT the most important IMHO is TRY the same notes a different way (leads to different expectations/stresses). You can then practice both (or umpteen) ways of playing the phrase and get over the stress/built in failure expectation.
The other, wicked, idea is dead simple - leave the awkward bit out!! Obviously there are some things you cannot leave out (for example the 'time bell' chimes in Sultans of Swing) unless you want the punters to riot, but it is surprisng what you can get away with!
Part of this also is that in the last 3-6 months my foot tapping has become (naturally) much more useful & reliable and I find that foot tapping makes a major difference to how accurately i play something (Even with the metronome going/backing track on its still better to have the foot tapping at the same time). Previously I simply could not do both at the same time.
Also I have been simply working on parts to make sure I feel more comfortable with them in the early stages, and also someone on here mentioned about learning solos "backwards" (as in from the last bars to the first so you're always going into "familiar territory" i think was the term they used). That has been really helpful.
As such I've found that:
1. Relearning stuff you play wrong in a different way
2. Foot tapping
3. Learning new stuff with more focus on accuracy
4. Learning solos / hard stuff from the last bars first
has made a real, decent difference.
I still feel I have a long way to go but definitely glad I posted on the subject!
