That lead tone... Marshalls rock. I tried to find a live version, but all the ones on Youtube were either trebly, muddy-bassy, or muffled.

I love that bass. Fuzzy and dominating... sounds best loud. The guitar isn't bad, either, all snarly, lofi and bad. Sounds even better on Rocksmith, when I can let the low E just keep sustaining on the P-bass.
Plus the scrolling message on this particular vid cracks me up.

Re: All-Time Favourite Tones
I'm a huge Mossy fan...
At every gig I play, I steal elements from his solo in this song (starts at 3:00):
Cold Chisel - As Long As I Can See The Light (Live)

The solo in this live version of Georgia makes me want to throw my Les Pauls out the window. Great lesson in how to use touch dynamics and the volume control on a guitar. Incredible (starts at 2:38 but the whole song is stunning):
Cold Chisel - Georgia (Live)

Can't go past this (intro riff at 0:36, solo at 3:57):
Cold Chisel - Forever Now (Live)

Lenny had some killer tones back in the day:
Lenny Kravitz - Are You Gonna Go My Way

Steve Lukather magic (solo starts at 3:12)...I'm not even embarrassed to admit that I love this song. Fuck you :
Toto - Rosanna

Doug Aldrich is just insane. Sopachrga lent me a Gibson Les Paul with some Doug Aldrich pickups in it. It made me sound exactly like this - note-for-note:
Doug Aldrich - Solo (Live)

+1Danger Mouse wrote:For tone that absolutely fits with the time, the music and the band, I still really rate AC/DC's TNT/High Voltage stuff. Just has a raw, dirty edge that matches Bon's vocals perfectly, as well as capturing the essence of a live gig in shit-hole bar in back of nowhere Oz outback town, with two angry little scotsmen letting their guitars say "don't fecking mess with us!".
I can still remember the feeling the first time I heard High Voltage on Countdown as a teenager in a small country town to which no band EVER went.
WHich brings to mind the sounmd of The Saints' "I'm Stranded" and "Know Your Product".
Rhett sure knows how to pick a good topic.

Also have to throw in Killer Queen. Sublime stuff from Sir Brian.

Greg V gets to play some mean gear. This is my #1 just now, especially the Tele at 3.23

Honorable mention for cleaner tones:

Too many guitars, not enough talent.

Hurdy Gurdy.... some how... and I'm not entirely certain how mind you, an instrument that sounds like someone has shoved a nest of angry hornets into a goose with a kazoo bill and is randomly slapping the poor creature with an accordion.... Sounds amazing.

I love both those songs and tones. I was tempted to put that Strokes song on my list but figured 7 was enough...Axel95 wrote:That lead part after the chorus

All-Time Favourite Tones
I listened to Last Impressions of Earth quite a bit. It came out when I worked at Sounds. I remember liking it - it was quite a departure.Axel95 wrote:@Rhett: Juicebox is my favourite from the strokes. Give it a listen
