You really don't want the strings to hit the back of the bridge so top wrapping allows you to crank the tail piece down on guitars that would other wise make the strings hit the back of the bridge. Its usually more of a problem on Nashville bridges which are wider but the neck angle and saddle heights also effect it. Different year Les Pauls have slightly different neck angles. Early Les Pauls and their recent reissues are usually fine without top wrapping. They have the narrow ABR bridge and a shallow neck angle.

I will have top wrap my Les Paul to avoid the strings touching the back of the bridge if I cranked the tailstop all the way down to the body despite it having a narrow ABR bridge.
That's interesting. Yeah I should have known you were talking about the tailstop, the pic of a bridge confused me. Must be looking at pics more than words nowadays  My Epi std and the 2 Edwards both have the tail stop right down, and no need to top wrap the strings, strings not hitting back of bridge.
You need to ask yourself, what would jimmy do.

Here is my version of a wrap over. Its the Best way to set up a LP IMO. It make bends easier and less string breakage on the Bridge.
String Tension is a bit less.

I occasionally get string breakage on the bridge so I might consider trying this.

I noticed the string tension change and felt sustain was greater but it was a week or so after I got my Gibson 8 years ago. Previously I had done it on my tokai which was a greater change for the better.

What is this "...string breakage at the bridge..." You all so frequently speak of?

Is it a problem peculiar to Gibson guitars?
