Live mic for amp..Live

Post by crowbgood1 »

Well I got 3 outdoor gigs so far this summer and I have, in the past, let the sound guys wack a 57 in front of my amp.
This winter I got a Audix i5 for my home studio. It's there equivalent to the SM57 but I find it picks up better mid and bass.
I,m thinking of using as a stage mic for my amp. Ya reckon anyone in the drunken crowd would even notice???..lol..

yep, there's always one guy standing by the door with his arms crossed dissecting your every note, he'll notice. then again he's inbetween bands (again). None of the drunks having a good time will even notice how many strings your guitar has.

Depends.

If you use your Audix, will the sound man dial out some mids and bass?
If you go with the 57 you could ask the sound man to dial in some more bass and mids. They usually listen to requests from musos on stage but.... do they actually do what they're asked?

In all seriousness, at worst the soundie probably doesn't know what he's doing but if he's one that really does know his stuff it's entirely possible he's EQ-ed the guitar to give space to other instruments and vocals.

Or something.

I've used an i5 live on guitar amps with excellent results. It does have a fuller sound to the 57.

In a single guitar band, I would ideally use an i5 or e609, and if the guitarist tone is decent, I don't use any EQ, why would you?
Instead I spend two minutes running between the amp and FOH moving the mic to get it in the correct position.

EQ is the lazy way to make a guitar sound OK, you get far better results from using the amp's EQ and the mic position.

I recently switched to using a large diaphragm condenser mic (Rode NT-2A) for live use and am LOVING it.

I figured that I really like my guitar tone, so I wanted to get a mic that could colour my tone the least possible and replicate the sound as closely as possible. This mic works pretty good.

From what I understand, the reason that people traditionally didn't use large-diaphragm condenser mics live was that they were expensive and fragile......but now they are more robust and much cheaper, it seems like a very good option to me.

ive seen quite a few pros use condensers like shure ksm 32s etc on guitar cabs. but to the OP..the i5 is a good choice.

That's what I was initially worried about. However, my Rode NT2A has switchable polar patterns. If I set it to the uni-directional, cardioid mode - it behaves much like a 57. No spill at all!

I wouldn't be bringing my own mic to mic my amp with, I think that you'll probably piss off the sound guy because it's not the done thing to do, it implies that you know better than the soundguy does, and anyway it's all over something which is so very unimportant
