Re: The Blues Primer thread
I believe that no matter where a musical genre originates from, the local derivation achieves relevance by incorporating it as an influence then, more importantly, finding ways to push the genre forward.
It's often easier to play what you know your audience is familiar with. It's braver to go looking for the thing they may one day become comfortable with.
Audiences will always think they are happy with what they know they like, until they're shown something they didn't know they'd like... and stuff.

Re: The Blues Primer thread
"Blues" is as relevant now as it ever was.
History is and always has been an important aspect of blues but so has innovation and development and, just as it’s always done, blues is continuing to evolve and reflect the changing times and lifestyles of the people who play it.
What’s needed is not another argument about ‘the only real blues is…’ but an open and inclusive appreciation of blues in all its forms and modern day mutations.
The blues continues to influence nearly every genre of modern and traditional music.

And please Vorbis. As a forward-looking, blues-based musician and song-writer I am personally insulted by this:
It'd be nice if you thought a little more before posting insulting crap like that, bro. Can't help thinking there's room here to harden up, Darren.otisredding wrote:...As a forward-looking, blues-based musician and song-writer I am personally insulted by this:....... It'd be nice if you thought a little more... etc
I don't see vorbs' comment being personal. Maybe a little misguided (although I can see what he's getting at and somewhat agree) but it was a very generalised statement. It pretty much applies to any music you care to mention.
In my case I'd say, as a backward looking, aging musician and songwriter, I openly admit I steal from everywhere. Often blatantly ripping stuff off. I'm just surprised how I fail so admirably at copying that my songs come out sounding almost fresh.
Stealing badly is a great way to innovate.

Just an opinion, 'bro'. And just as valid an opinion as yours...don't go getting your knickers in a twist just because the Blues bores the piss out of me....etcotisredding wrote:
