Hall Of Shame
Are there any guitarists who's tone prevents you from enjoying their music?
I was thinking about this while checking out Johhny Winter after seeing a Rig Rundown on his gear. He uses some kind of Steinberger monstrosity into a Boss Chorus pedal into a Musicman amp with the bass all the way off and the treble all the way up. Now, I definitely enjoy the kind of music Winter makes, but his tone is horrendous. It's overly gainy, shrill, and the random use of chorus just sounds so out of place.

Re: Hall Of Shame
The treble rolled off, neck pickup archtop tone used in Jazz. I hate it. In fact I prefer Jazz on anything other than a guitar which is a pity.
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

Doesn't Johnny Winter use some sort of sweet Firebird?
And on topic not anyone in particular but most live metal bands I've seen (well all the ones that aren't at least semi-pro). I can tell the playing is good and they're playing some sweet stuff but they usually go for that br00tz tone with scooped mids and way too much bass and you can't really hear the notes with any clarity, just a wall of bassy chugs. Fractured and Tainted had sweet live sound though, think they were using Line6 Rack Pro things (the one that Sooapcharga has I believe) and that was a great live sound, but all the local bands just seem to have all balls and no definition. One exception was Osmium, a band we played with a couple times, they were just a 3 piece, and very tight so everything was exceptionally clear

Re: Hall Of Shame
Winter plays an Erlewine Lazer made by the famous tech Dan Erlewine. Has for many years.
Also plays the Firebird, used it at Claptons Crossroads in 2010.
I have always liked Johnny's stuff but prefer his slower (it's all relative!) blues stuff. His vocals can be an acquired taste.
Miracle he's still alive, let alone playing, and making albums. The latest, Roots (with guests) is supposed to be very good.

This statement alone could earn you a 6 month ban. Fortunately I'm reasonably chillaxed this morning so I may overlook your indescretion.Rhettsauce wrote: some kind of Steinberger monstrosity
And as I'm considering selling my steiny to fund my tricone gas...

Re: Hall Of Shame
How dare you put Johnny in a title of hall of shame. It's all subjective, I love his stuff, you'd hate my stuff too.

Re: Hall Of Shame
Yeah - I agree that it's totally subjective.
And on that note... I don't like Steve Vai's guitar tone. It's the Pamela Anderson of guitar tones. Probably that's because I don't like the G3 style of music, but I also just don't like his tone.
...And now I'm going to run for the hills.

Often yes but when they get it right it sounds exquisite. Slightly overdriven with the tone knob backed off just a tad. Lush.slowfingers wrote:The treble rolled off, neck pickup archtop tone used in Jazz. I hate it. In fact I prefer Jazz on anything other than a guitar which is a pity.

Re: Hall Of Shame
I love a neck humbucker in an archtop for jazz, but there should absolutely no need to wind the tone control back. Should be plenty warm enough as long as the pickup's positioned well forward.benderissimo wrote:Often yes but when they get it right it sounds exquisite. Steve Lukather springs to mind. Great player, but horrible eighties tone. Too processed and sterile.
