It wasn't love at first play...

When Rhett posted this in the Tones thread, I was captivated by it; played it a dozen times in a row. Yesterday, I looked at my CD collection (yes, I'm old) and there was a copy of Wilco's Sky Blue Sky.

I'd bought it, played it 2 or 3 times and failed utterly to connect with it. Played the whole album again today and I think we're going to become friends.

So I was wondering what it is about Youtube and I think I know. What grabbed me about the vid wasn't initially the music, it was the band and how they played as a unit. That would have been a great stage to be part of.

I've often found that the music I have an enduring liking for takes some time to appreciate. Looking forwawd to more Wilco. :D

QOTSA albums are quite hard to take to the first half doz times through.

Someone gave me a copy of Lullabies and I did the same thing. Couple of listens before putting it away for a year or two. Now it's one of those albums I can't stop listening to. Just don't get sick of it.

Lots of the best rock albums are like this.

Chances are if you like it the first time through, you're listening to pop.
Nothing to see here.

Cool! Sky Blue Sky is definitely their most sleepy album, but I like it a lot.

As far as bands I didn't gel with on first listen, but ended up loving, I can't think of a lot of them. Arcade Fire was probably the last one.

Damn that track is depressing sounding, has no spark to it to grab me, would actually be better without lyrics!

Oh, Impossible Germany... Good song, good song. :D :D

What more could you want from a song that already has:
* A tele
* Voxes
* Jazzmaster and subsequent jazzmaster abuse
* SG
* HARMONIES
* A sweet, phat solo

?

I went though a lot of that when I first left Australia and moved to Argentina. if rock wasn't in English I kind of got all snobby about it.

These days I am considerably more open minded about things.
"Vince, have you ever tried playing an expensive bass?" - Polarbear.
"And isn't that the finest acoustic bass guitar feedback solo you've ever heard?" - Billy Moose.

You missed out
* Great arrangement
* Really tight playing.

And Rhett, it is a sleepy album; that's what put me off it.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is supposed to be their classic. It's pretty great. Their new one, The Whole Love, is a return to their more experimental form too. Both worth a listen.

Have you heard The Decemberists?

I often find that albums that I love straight away I get bored with, and those that take a while to connect with are the best. I remember the time a girl at school (long time ago) lent my "Are You Experienced ?" and I thought it was a load of noisy crap. I was listening to Prince and Nik Kershaw at around that age though :oops:
Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...

Faith No More.

I went from "they're alright" to "they're pretty good!" to "WTF is this shit?!??" to "this is awesome!!!".

I can't help but smile when I hear the ridiculous over-the-topness of The Gentle Art Of Making Enemies or Star A.D.
