Great guitar tones from unexpected sources

Post by mr_sooty »

Any examples of amazing tones from players you know nothing about?

EG: I'm in love with the guitar tone on Cutting Crew's (I Just Died) In Your Arms Tonight. It sounds nearly perfect to me, grunty but with plenty of bite and clarity. Rocky, but not too saturated. And it doesn't hurt that it's one of the most tasteful solos out there in retro rock/pop land. I have no idea who played it or what gear they used, but that's some tone right there.

Anybody else got any really random ones like that?

I still really like the guitar work and tone Bender laid over the Pascoes advert, every time it comes on it catches my ear.

Hmm, good question sooty. I'm sure there are tons but none jump to mind right now. I also have a tendency to confuse tones I like with riffs I like...

Always like the tone on Black Cat by Janet Jackson, but I heard that it was Nuno playing on that.

The reverb drenched solo which sounds like a Tele neck pickup from Mazzy Star's "Still Cold".

Solo in 'Listen To Your Heart', by Roxette. Both guitarists.

While I agree that a pascoes ad is probably an unexpected place to find sublime guitar tone, I would also say that if bender is making the soundtrack I would expect nothing less.

There's this iPhone game called Burger Queen which has some nice guitar licks in the theme music.

I know this is weird, but do you have a link to this ad? It's probably not floating around the internet, but I never watch TV and want to hear it.

None online at the moment. I don't know if I'm allowed to post the music by itself either.

I thought this thread was gonna be about good tones coming from unexpected rigs or something

my Gretsch with a modded Boss DS-1 into a 15Watt Stagg Solid State Combo, while not a traditionally sexy or pleasing tone in most senses, it was perfect for the blues covers I did with Brent (HANGMAN) in Dunedin a few times. Clean tone was crisp and clear, and stomping on the DS-1 made a nice raspy old school blues lead tone. By itself probably pretty horrible sounding, but in the context of the band with acoustic guitar, bass and snare it worked beautifully.
