Alternate tunings

Post by jeremyb »

Looks like we lost the old thread in the crash... Been going through a song learning phase and concentrating on Neil Young, so got the telemaster in double drop D, it's a great sound, really digging it!

I just discovered double drop-D recently too when I learned Midnight Rider by the Allman Brothers.

It also works well for an acoustic version of Collective Soul's Shine.

My favorite alt tuning is open E. I love playing Black Crows' She Talks to Angels.

Open G is cool too, especially for the Stones.
Nothing to see here.

Ok, since we're sharing, my standard tuning for the bass these days is DGDG (I imagine on guitar it would be DGDGBD)

I love the drone capabilities, almost as good as the White House's.

Another cool tuning is open Am: EAEACE. It's not real common, but there are lots of interesting possibilities. You can also leave the third string on G for an open Am7. It can be limiting (works best obviously for Am and Cmaj), but you can work with triads on the top three strings while droning with any of the bottom three for some really cool voicings.

I can't even play in standard tuning....

But I like mucking around in plain old drop D or drop C for chunky fun.
