I finally think I understand overdrive pedals
Had a bit of a revelation recently, I've always thought of OD pedals as a bit pointless when you have a great sounding drive sound on your amp, but since I got the sweet baby I've had it always on into the JCM800 channel of my amp and I love it!
I've obviously backed the gain off on the amp, and only added subtle gain on the pedal, but it gives me the same level of heavy as before but the clarity of notes has improved, and it has a tighter sound. We use a ton of gain so it's important it's not all muddy like some amps can get!
The clarity thing seems to be related to the EQ'ing of the pedal, makes the lower notes stand out better, bit brighter, so I can hear them more clearly with earplugs on, which is improving my accuracy when playing with the band
Our other guitarist tried it into his blackstar tube head and was impressed too, doesn't add mud like the OCD we tried did, really dig the note definition you get with it.

I don't think so, it's probably an EL84 thing, altho' thru the EL34's of the Blackstar it sounded crap too... had a really bass heavy middy sound, not appealing at alldruz15 wrote:ur doin it wrongjeremyb wrote:mud ... OCD

Same here. For about a year and a half my pedal board was set up with the distortion going into the overdrive....i like the sound of the individual pedals but together it was a bit poo's.Then did a bit of board maintenence and swapped them round and it was "Oh.... I should have been overdirving the distortion instead of distorting the overdrive all along!!
Loving the sound now.

Yep, in the LP mode they are pretty massive bass-wise. Depends on the version too.jeremyb wrote:I don't think so, it's probably an EL84 thing, altho' thru the EL34's of the Blackstar it sounded crap too... had a really bass heavy middy sound, not appealing at alldruz15 wrote:ur doin it wrongjeremyb wrote:mud ... Re: I finally think I understand overdrive pedals
a big clean all tube 100 watt beast is a good place to test overdrive pedals. I like the Boss SD1 with an old Marshall or an MXR Dist+ with the right amp. Try using these two pedals into a small low watt amp will accentuate the inherent fizz.
There are still some that think the neck PU is moved to accommodate the extra frets which only proves they cannot detect the difference in length of each.

I was surreptitiously pushing it on people at the gearfest, and at band practice, and I might have mentioned it a couple of times on hereBg wrote:oh lordy. Its going to be a case of sweet baby as the answer to every question now
