What skills do you respect most about a guitarist?

Its all in the fingers, or is it?

What skills do you respect most about a guitarist?

Post by jeremyb »

I'm really wanting to improve my skills, I know some areas I really need to focus on, mostly accuracy (fretting cleanly, hitting the right notes etc..) and strumming, I'm fairly decent at staying in time and playing with others thankfully, but what else would be worth working on? I'm not interested in being a shredder or anything like that, just a well rounded guitarist :)

Really playing in time. Like "locked in", not "kinda in time".

Aside from what the others have said, I respect guitarists who can pick things up really quickly and play a lot of different styles of music.

And those who can bring ze shreds.

Individual style - hard to define, but something truly unique.
Killer sense of time
Ability to shut up

and completely unfair, but I don’t have a lot respect for guitarists who can't play acoustic or at least electric with no FX or epic distortion. Once you turn off all that stuff, there’s no where to hide.

I'm disgusted that you don't know this. It's quite obvious that the most important skill you need to learn is headbanging!

setting up the guitar
Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...

2 outta 3 ain't bad.
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

I'd have to say their choice of 100w amps and the ability to win the turnover ball.

I like people that can play something I've never heard before.
"Vince, have you ever tried playing an expensive bass?" - Polarbear.
"And isn't that the finest acoustic bass guitar feedback solo you've ever heard?" - Billy Moose.

As far as lead playing goes I'd say phrasing. I like if I can remember solos.

Some people also seem 'at one' with their guitar whilst others seem to play like they have something foreign in their hands. The former probably manage to convey something of themselves in their playing. Whilst that's difficult to quantify as a 'skill' it's something that separates the men from the boys.

Ability to make awesome sound is the best skill too. Work on how to accomplish that.
