Comparing Bridge Humbuckers

Post by Molly »

Well, kind of. They're in different guitars so there's that issue but I thought I'd show them anyway. Amp's on the Plexi channel with the gain about 2 o'clock and the master way low (just about conversation level). Outputs are similar. Shaw is about 7.3. BK about 8.2 and Suhr about 8.5.

Les Paul with Shaw pickups.

335 with Bare Knuckle Riff Raff

335 with Bare Knuckle Mules

Suhr Strat with whatever they put in the Classic Pro

All sound good! But I think I'd have the BK out of them all if I had to pick one.
And nice playing Brian!

Cheers Reg. Just a wee noodle. Agree about the BK winning-out.

I quite like the LP/Shaw combo I think it sounds much bigger than the others. Maybe just my speakers eh?

Who knows? Not the most scientific comparison I suppose. Just my phone plonked on top of the amp. They all sound good in isolation.

Def digging the LP/Shaw. Sounds more complete when driven while still sounding organic. BKP sounds slightly dulled in the lower mids with a slight rasp in the upper mids. Suhr sounded great but maybe a little sterile and bright when compared to the LP. All sounded great though. Just making my own comparison between the three.

Having owned that very LP, plus having used BKPs in a Gibson ES-137 I used to own, and owning a few Suhrs with their pickup combinations I would say that you have hit the nail on the head

I liked the strat best. Mind you that will have more to do with it being a strat than the pick ups. It had an openness and bite the others didn't

I think the strat would really shine when you're using more gain

I like the Shaws best.
Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...

All are fantastic!

I think I like the shaws the best too -only by a smidgen. To be honest, it's so close that I'd have ABSOLUTELY no chance picking them out in a blind test.

Not much between the LP and 335. I preferred the LP in the end, but not sure it is due to the pickups. The notes did not thin out so much as the other gats when sustaining. Might find the LP worked best with that amp and setting. Another amp and setting and the Suhr might work best etc.

Not a fair comparison as you say because of the different guitars but, to my ears, the LP sounded thin & harsh.
The Suhr sounded good & the 335 sounded the best & warmest.
Epiphone Riviera P93 & EJ200CE, Hagstrom Viking Bass, Doubleneck bass/guitar.
Rivera Clubster 45, Carvin AG100D, Ashton BSK158.

I like that there are a range of preferences.

Going to fit the Mule set to the 335 and see how much difference that makes. Again, it's not a good comparison. Different guitars, low volume, one setting etc. But it keeps me out of trouble. ;-)

Thanks for the replies.
