Wound G Strings
Its not just an acoustic thing, I've got both my electrics strung with wound G string sets and I'm really digging the way it feels, has anyone else converted to this?

I've used D'Addario Flat Wounds for ever & they have a wound G string.

Re: Wound G Strings
I play mostly rhythm guitar and prefer heavy strings, I am an unnecessarily hard strumming player and it helps keep chords in tune...but, and it's a big but, I find a wound g harder to bend in tune and fast to have the windings break up, ymmv.
Tin arse!!

Re: Wound G Strings
After spending an evening playing a selection of my mate Melcolm's lovely guitars, mostly strung up with 9's, I have gone lighter with all my guitars.
What guage are a set of electric strings with a wound g string? I'm not sure what tonality advantages there would be, but it sure is fun to say "my wound g string likes the touch of your strong hands".

A sure cure for seasickness is to sit under a tree.

Re: Wound G Strings
Did you have to widen your slot?
Iβve gone back and forth, but have settled on 11-48(or 49) as my preferred gauge. I used 12s for a while- with both wound and unwound Gs, and liked them a lot, but 11s strike a nice balance between chonkiness and bendability.

Chonkiness is an awesome word . Sums it up nicely.bender wrote: βSat Jan 14, 2023 7:33 amDid you have to widen your slot?

Some slots will need to be widened for a wound G. Some jazz players like them. I find it a bit much on an electric guitar.
On a Strat, 9s feel too loose, 10s feel too tight. 9.5 is a thing apparently, anyone tried that?

Re: Wound G Strings
On my strat I have a custom set from Stringjoy (their recommended gauges for balanced tension with the wound G) which are: 010 .0135 .018w .026w .036 .048 and its in standard tuning.crowbgood1 wrote: βSat Jan 14, 2023 6:58 am What guage are a set of electric strings with a wound g string?
On my Artist superstrat I have the D'Addario light baritone 13-62 set in B standard.

Re: Wound G Strings
I like the feel and tension of heavy strings, but I also like to be able to bend the G string occasionally.olegmcnoleg wrote: βSat Jan 14, 2023 7:54 amChonkiness is an awesome word . Sums it up nicely.bender wrote: βSat Jan 14, 2023 7:33 amDid you have to widen your slot?

Re: Wound G Strings
Mmmm I think thats why I always used to gravitate towards 10-52 sets, those fatter wound strings you can really hit hard but still bend the plain steels just fine
