I was reading the manual for my amp this weekend (as you do when you've got nothing else to do!) and being the man that I am when I bought the amp some 4 years ago I just turned a few knobs and got a sound I liked and left it like that.
But I read something in the manual that was talking about connecting an external preamp to the power amp output so I did it and I couldn't believe how clean and smooth the sound became!
Can anyone explain to me why this would be? I'm just not smart enough to realise it on my own!
Finally using Ampeg to its full potential!

The manual probably dumbs down the technical bits behind this but I'll try and explain. From what you've described I can assume this happened not long after you'd stood on one leg in a leaky bucket of cold custard wearing a fairy suit made of onion skins? Let's say yes because, in my experience at least, it's the only way to achieve this. The act of connecting an external pre-amp to the power amp disrupts the space time continuum and opens a vortex into the future letting an army of milk powered nanobots to enter this universe. From that point onwards it's fairly self explanatory.

I could copy & paste that anywhere for anything at it would be awesome.adrian0476 wrote:The manual probably dumbs down the technical bits behind this but I'll try and explain. Well, mainly it's that you're not using the ampeg EQ, and only the poweramp out of the Ampeg.chrls wrote:I was reading the manual for my amp this weekend (as you do when you've got nothing else to do!) and being the man that I am when I bought the amp some 4 years ago I just turned a few knobs and got a sound I liked and left it like that.

This situation is pretty much the opposite of using the Ampeg to its potential. All the Ampeg characteristics of the Ampeg tone tend to be in the way it does its EQ. Without that, you're essentially just amplifying the original signal so its loud and not Ampeg-gy
Whatever preamp you used, keep it. Sell the Ampeg and buy a solid state poweramp and I bet you'll be happier.
