Cab Selection Quandry -> Impulse Response Selection...

Post by jeremyb »

The general internet consensus is that the amp sims in the Pod HD series is great, but the cabs are shite, heard quite a few people having great experiences with the Pangaea and EPSi, but both aren't midi controllable so I'd need one cab to rule them all... and no I can't afford a Two Notes Torpedo!

So... from the wealth of speaker and cab experience on here, what I need is something that would sound equally at home with a JCM800 being cranked for my dirt sounds and with a Hiwatt or Fender blackface style amp for my cleans (lol).... and then to find an impulse response that sounds amazeballs :)

Any suggestions????

My guess would be EVM12L or Fane.
Amps:
Soldano SLO100 x2 | Wizard MC1 & MC2 | Diezel Herbert
Fryette Pittbull CL | Marshall 2203KK | Krank Rev 50 | Mesa Mark 2A

Rack stuff:
VHT/Fryette GP3, GP/DI & 2/90/2 | Peters FSM/Chimera
Verellen Meatsmoke | Synergy SYN1 | Mesa Studio

Hey J
firstly : beware the hype!.
however....I recently tried two redwire IRs on my helix and they are good. It appears the the memory used up to give you mic choices and distance and early reflections is the difference. Not sure but it makes sense.
Im using the redwire EVH 3A cab...its recorded with the mic halfway across the cone. Im using a second open back as well but I quite like this across most of my amps.

At the end of the day remember that no-one in the audience will notice the difference...and in the middle of a gig neither will you..

Fully agree, for live use we're so loud it doesn't matter  but I want something that sounds great for recording too, will check the redwire stuff out, I can probably run a IR loader on my macbook to test some of this stuff out

I've found that the Fane loaded Hiwatt 4x12 impulses on the AxeFx work brilliantly with everything. I think they might be an Ownhammer?

I have no idea what's going on here.

Impulse response is basically a wav file that a bit of software can use to emulate a cabinet or room when you chuck a signal at it :)

its not exactly cork sniffing...its more like analysing the glass the bottle is made of for its impact on the wine.

It's like walking onto the set of a porn movie. Something vaguely familiar is going on, but in such a way that it makes you feel a bit icky.

Personally I find the cabs in the helix good.

My main rig is a matchless lightning with a G12H and Blue speakers both with 121 ribbons.

Sounds legit.

I've toyed with IR's and find them all really hissy and fizzy sounding.

which ones did you like? I see they have a range of bogner cabs, which I'd be tempted by, probably the oversize 2x12 with greenbacks.

Any others worth looking for? I use impulse responses with Bias Amp. Or rather I haven't yet.... as I didn't realise it could use them lol
Its not enough that we succeed, we still need others to fail
