Old / New tele build

Post by MakoGat »

I have a bunch of stuff left over from modding my Tele, so figured Id make another. Got the body and a neck from Doc on the weekend, just sanded the body back bare, then Im going to use a special technique to bleach it white, then using a lace curtain as a stencil Ill lightly spray a yet to be decided, subtle colour pattern on it before matt clear sealer.

Specs will be, relic neck, bridge humbucker, tele neck pickup, relic chrome hardware (green scotchbrite pad), cut down pickguard.

Should have the first coat of "bleaching" product on it today so will post more photos as project progresses.

Thanks. Gotta rout out the bridge pickup hole for humbucker and wondering what to do with old pickguard screw holes, might cut off the heads of some small nails and glue the shafts in maybe?? Have decided on the template for the contrasting colour just waiting now for delivery. Thinking of turquoise??

Fret level, crown and polish the frets on the neck tonight while waiting for the bleaching of the body to dry. Need to order string trees, tuners, strap pins, neck plate and some wire this week and wait for them all to arrive, hate waiting. Sure going to be putting in some hours on this build but I love doing it.

Get some thin dowel from bunnings / mitre 10, drill appropriate sized hole, insert, cut flush, job done!

Body 75% thru bleaching process, its looking very pale now, like blonde with grain showing but not brown like before. Will post image prior to applying the stencil colour and matt clear coat.

All parts ordered except humbucker bridge, metal neck pickup surround and tuners which I need to get from Australia next pay day lol.

I like where this is going. Hot rail at the neck?

Alnico 5 neck pickup from a Tele.

With this bleaching process, the longer you leave it, the whiter it gets, goes like a silver white. As im in a bit of a rush with this build so i can move it on i got impatient and clear coated it last night, so its not as light as i wanted and the satin clear does darken it a little again. Will try for a pic this afternoon so you can see.

Most of the hardware arrives on Monday so will be busy putting it together before setup and will be for sale in the near future.

Also "aged" both pickup covers. Wiring up control plate, installing misc hardware here an there and should have the neck back on the body tonight. Just minus HB bridge, SC surround and tuners which arent to far away.
