Bad restring can be a big deal tuning wise. Just did my strat and got the low e wrong (stacked the winds on top of each other kinda sorta) and it goes out if struck too hard. Dropped down more than a tone ... I'm not really sure that's meant to be possible but whatever I'm just gonna blame the strin...

If you don't mind attaching a strap permanently you can just unscrew the strap buttons, place strap > place washer > screw button back in. You obviously need a washer for this but that's gonna be cheaper than replacing the buttons / buying new locks.
