Re: Why overcomplicate it...

The keys to great vibrato. There are two techniques: 1. Play the note. Grab headstock and waggle it back and forth while the note rings (and vibrates). 2. Play the note. Grab the body of the guitar, move it as far away from your body as the strap allows and shake it in a manner that resonat...

Re: Shake it baby

I tend to use the following: 1 - Blues style, parallel to the frets, usually in the thumb-hooked-over-neck hand position. Easy to execute on a bend. Pitch based. 2 - Classical style, perpendicular to the frets, usually in thumb-behind-neck hand position. Volume based. 3 - Circular style, combination...

Re: Best Signature Gat?

I think that the Ibanez JPM is/was a great guitar for a Signature model. It has everything I desire in an Ibanez shred machine; direct mount pickups, no fingerplate, a thicker-than-wizard neck, and single volume and tone. The only thing I'd perhaps change is swapping out the 3-way switch to a 5-way ...

Re: Show Us Your Guitar

There are always two things that impress me in this thread, the quality of guitars and the setups. This is as close as I get to watching pr0n at work..

Re: My quest to play like Randy Rhoads

Coming along nicely mate, like you said before.. it's all in the practice. Speaking of which, if I pull finger I may get my recording setup out and produce a submission. I was supposed to do it days ago but unfortunately I'm a working man who doesn't get to practice like a shredder should. Still, we...

Re: My quest to play like Randy Rhoads

The benchmark is going to be the solo from Dream Theater's Erotomania, following on from a tie, the winner will be he who can play Jason Becker's Perpetual Burn the cleanest..

Re: My quest to play like Randy Rhoads

I don't mind being the judge :P j/k I think it should be solely based on playing, in the event of a tie then going to tone. :D I'd really like to hear one of these solos done clean style with a rich jazz tone (semi-hollow with a maple neck would rock my world if someone's willing to indulge me) just...

Re: My quest to play like Randy Rhoads

It seems to me that he reached those amazing heights you hear on the records only on those magic days where everything would just click into place and then somebody would record it. So are you all expecting too much from me? lol! Just trying to push you harder. :D I don't think that was the case wi...

Re: My quest to play like Randy Rhoads

To offer my 2c; there are a few pieces of advice I can offer. Tone: You're falling into the trap of scooped mids. It's a fake metal trap. (Run). Listening to RR's tone you can clearly hear a rich mid and upper mid mix, you almost lose the bass altogether. That's a huge clue. Most of the tone in a gu...

Re: Coheed and Cambria

The concert was amazing. Quite possibly the best of the year across genres. They were so tight and the fact that they were playing such an intimate venue (when they usually pack stadiums) made it all the more special. Even better was the fact that there were no under-18's allowed entry (despite no R...

If they're good enough for Roine Stolt then they are good enough for me.

That said, I'll stay with my USRG and McCarty..

Mark Knopfler - Portabello Belle Live, when he hits the bends in the solo the tone is liquid aural gold.

Has anybody mentioned Mr. Zappa? His lead tone was awesome, almost rude in it's cutting nature.
High gain, loads of mids/highs, an open wah pedal.. what more could you ask for to cut through the mix?
