Re: Reclaimed wood Tele 15-01-15 (pic heavy)

The caveat being, I may well have struck it lucky with the particular no-brand pens that I picked up from a no-brand store that is now a pile of rubble or hopefully an empty lot by now. There's no guarantees, but it does show a bit of enterprise, I guess. I'm extremely lucky they've proved very stab...

Re: Reclaimed wood Tele 15-01-15 (pic heavy)

yeah theres a youtube somewhere of a guy doing a water based burst on a mandolin or similar? I was tempted by that... but fuck it must have taken days ;), just spray the colour on, spray black around the edge, end of story lol Here ya go. I've used this technique, it works absolutely brilliantly, a...

Re: Reclaimed wood Tele 7-01-15 update

Yeah, it'll stick beautifully. Just give it all plenty of time to dry thoroughly before you do it. It really is the bee's knees, and you can opt for the range of finish styles, matt, semi matt or gloss. You get variations on matt by using synthetic steel wool after application. You can get a deep gl...

Re: Reclaimed wood Tele 7-01-15 update

That's definitely rimu. I hope you won't feel the need to cover up that beautiful native timber with ash or anything else. It's very pretty as is. Don't worry about the "tonewood" thing. It's electric, any adjustments to tone (if it needs it, which it almost certainly won't) can be made in...

Re: Still keeping my hand in

Yup, homemade tailpiece, The top bout is kahikatea, the lower bout and back are swamp kauri. The neck was from some pointy thing that I picked up for parts years ago, owing to a lack of time between deposit and due date. I put a veneer of kauri on the headstock. The neck had been painted black, but ...

Still keeping my hand in

Been a long time between drinks, here's a new gat I just finished. http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h323/kamerawerk/DSC_8857_zps19c9648d.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h323/kamerawerk/DSC_8859_zpse2467cb6.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h323/kamerawerk/DSC_8863_zps4e975850.jpg ht...

Re: Island Bay Classic

Thanks for the comments fellas. JVPP - yep, an SA will be on the cards one day. I'd still rather own another original, but I just can't afford one these days. BG - I guess a new neck is an easy fix! At least it gives me an excuse to build another for the longer neck. I'm actually developing a bass v...

Re: Island Bay Classic

Nah, bridge movement isn't possible because of the paua. As for a shim, bugger that.

It's getting a new neck, I want one of these for myself anyway, so I'll just make mine 25.5".

Re: Island Bay Classic

Thanks for the compliments guys. Turns out, I made the dumbest mistake I've ever made building guitars. I based the body off another build I did about a year ago, which in the meantime I had forgotten was my only 24.75" scale guitar to date. The 25.5" neck isn't intonating terrible good. :...

Re: Island Bay Classic

Love the honeysuckle. My favorite native. Nice job It's cool, eh? I'd been looking for it for ages, and then my brother, a carpenter/joiner/builder, put me onto a place that has it in plentiful supply. I'd been looking at wrecking old furniture from TM, but rewarewa pieces tend to go for a fair amo...

Re: Island Bay Classic

Here's another of the back. http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h323/kamerawerk/SANY0732_zps4c39dd79.jpg The cavity cover was a natural hole in one of the slices of kauri I got from the slab I bought. Combined with epoxy, it was the perfect size for the cavity I'd laid out. http://i1104.photobucket....

Re: Island Bay Classic

looking good...any "snaking" on the back of the rewarewa neck????? Yep. Unfortunately, not having used it before I didn't think about orientation, so it's on the underside. I'll be building another for myself, so I'll have it the other way round so you can see it while you're playing. htt...

Re: Island Bay Classic

Thanks, man, nice of you to say. Nope I don't work for Weta or anyone as fun as that, in fact my job is about as far from fun as it's possible to get. The body is skewed/modified version of the body shape I used for my solid body acoustic build last year. That body shape was an amalgam of Tele, LP J...
