Re: Tonerider Pickups
I still have toneriders in my guitar - a humbucker-sized P90 in the neck and a generator in the bridge. Can't complain about the sound, these are really nice pickups IMHO.

Re: OTL guitar amp?
This looks quite relevant - some info about the transformerless design. and it will probably use an electrodynamic speaker. http://www.instructables.com/id/How_to_fix_a_classic_American_AM_tube_radio/ But be careful - apparently many of these amps chassis are live when they are powered up, according...

Re: AXE-FX + Atomic Reactor
Yeah, I've heard mixed reviews of many of those units too, and i've often found with my preamp (Tube Fex) that after tinkering with a tone and thinking youve nailed it, that when playign it later on you think 'damn, that sounds like sh*t'. I think it just takes more dicking round with settings than ...

Re: AXE-FX + Atomic Reactor
Well, it looks like a pretty nice package. But i don't see too much in the way of radical or revolutionary technology here. Its pretty much the old separate preamp/power amp/cabinet thing - although in this case they put the amp in the speaker cabinet. Thats somewhat novel, but most people gigging t...

Re: combo tips
Probably not going to be a popular option round here, but the valve king does a pretty decent pristine clean at low cost. Just ignore the dirty channel and its a great pedal platform, and you can choose to run it in its half-power 'class A' mode if you want a touch more breakup at high volume. Obvio...

Re: James May's Toy Stories
I've been watching this. I like the concept, but i find james may a bit dull as a host. He sort of idly muses in a terribly humourless fashion for long periods of time. While i don't support cutting the show to fit in ads, I reckon you could easily edit half of the show out and not actually miss any...

Just pack the inside of the amp with dry ice. doubles as a smoke machine. really, could it get any more awesome than that?

Re: change preamp to 12AU7
When one of the 12AX7s in my valveking died I put a 12AT7 in V2 and it definitely makes the gain channel more manageable - it used to be quite difficult to get a 'low gain' setting on the dirty channel, since it pretty much went from 'quite dirty indeed' to 'unleash the focking fury' - now its much ...

Re: Best of the cheap pickups
I had duncan designed HB-103s in my schecter, replaced them with (funnily enough) even cheaper toneriders. Actually i was happy with the stock pickups, thought i'd just try the tonerider P-90 in the neck position, and liked it so much i got the hot bridge 'generator' pickup as well. The HB-103s were...

Re: Them Crooked Vulture Roll Call
I went along, jumped around, sweated my ass off. left totally exhausted with my ears ringing. it was all good. Can't really see myself listening to them in a non-live situation, i find the music a bit dense and lacking 'hooks' - I guess it just has to be loud as hell. But yeah they put on a great sh...

Re: Midi controller technology
MIDI is basically a serial data transfer protocol - it uses a set of messages to describe note events, control changes and can also be used to send arbitrary data via sysex. Its old, slow and limited, but is apparently the only standard for digital interfacing that musical instrument manufacturers c...
