I am pretty sure you can. I have Logic Pro, but most of the time I use mainstage to run everything for "silent" practice time. As far as I am aware they are independent and I certainly don't have to have both open at the same time.

Personally I like shiny brand new things, but then I like the idea of a guitar I can ding and not give a shit about it. That's about the only value a relic would have for me.
