Re: Much Eastman love....

What do you guys think of the truetone finish? It seems like they switched from nitro a few years ago but retailers are slow to update and still advertise it as nitro. Seems like thin poly to me.

Re: The Acoustic Thread

Anyone have any Fred Kelly thumb picks? Seems all the Travis pickers swear by the speed ones. I'd like to try some out, but they can only be ordered in 24 packs and I don't want to spend over $60 just to try one.

Re: The Acoustic Thread

That is right, yes. There is a trend amongst some builders to make guitars where the back & sides take as much of the structural load as possible, leaving the top to be free to just vibrate. So the top needs very little bracing, it is basically a speaker cone. Laminates are much stronger, so th...

Re: Modern guitars with baseball bat necks

I played an old Italian guitar with a stupidly large baseball bat neck and loved it, but it was a bit rubbish otherwise. Are there any low/mid-range modern options that I might find in the guitar shops here that aren't more than $2k? Maybe get a generic tele and replace the neck... is that what peo...

Re: Late 1940s electric sound

Overdriving amps was definitely a desired sound and intentional effect. I've read all these things about Link Wray and Chuck Berry 'inventing' it in the 50s... but Django and his contemporaries had already embraced it in the late 40s.

Re: Late 1940s electric sound

The breakup is just from the fender champ turned up to 11 on the low input. I really dig it when it sizzles. It's recorded with my phone. The amp and speakers are about 1 meter away on either side of me. Djangos distorted sound was from a cranked 6 watt Stimer amp. Apparently he liked to play very l...

I just knew he played that guitar then I found this a bit later, same song even. Sounds assertive, I like it. A...

That string gauge looks pretty aggressive...

Also, this feels more like Bebop than blues to me.
He plays 11s
It's still a blues progression :mental:
