Re: R9 refret & inlays
hey Grantb, how did you go about flattening the fretboard? I imagine just going at it with sandpaper would take material off everywhere, have you got some sort of a jig to keep yourself from going too deep where it doesn't need it? Want to do a rickenbacker next? I use a straight aluminium square t...

Re: What's on your work bench?
A baby table saw! For fret slots. Where has this been all my life?!
Yes, those are centimeters.

Re: R9 refret & inlays
Here's one example of the R9 checking...these are little knicks that then crack.

Re: R9 refret & inlays
Here's a shot of a nib-retained fret job on a 74 Custom...and how proud the fret edge is versus the nib.
Do not recommend.

Re: R9 refret & inlays
Definitely cracking around the normal points - knobs, headstock front, where there are knocks. I'll take some shots. The nitro in this era was very thin, which I like. But, it is more susceptible to knocks and dings.

Re: R9 refret & inlays
Thanks for the progress updates. Why does the fretboard go out of shape and require sanding? Not 100% of the time, but more often than not. Same with bolt on necks too. Fender guitars often have a rising tongue (/JB) that needs to be sanded out. Gibson seem to get this high nut area, a hollow 7-10 ...

Re: R9 refret & inlays
I have got one here, and have installed a few. There’s a chance I might install it, but I really do love how bone looks and sounds.
Nylon is to nuts, what stainless steel is to frets. Quite challenging to work with.

Re: R9 refret & inlays
I love these pickups - Throbak MXV101+ LTD. This was the run Jon did with NOS wire. I have another 101+ non LTD set, and they're very close. The LTD have a slightly more honky tone...a little more scooped. But it's marginal.

Re: R9 refret & inlays
You can see how much needed to come off the board at the nut end.
I'll get photos happening of the fret work. I'm so happy to be losing the nibs. I like my frets all the way to the edge.
Nut is bone.

R9 refret & inlays
Decided to do it. This is a '99 R9 (40th Anniversary). 25 years old - so a real 59 burst in 1984! It's my only R9, and I have had a few come and go. All good...just this one has something else. The frets were almost salvageable, but I'd have to do them again in a few years and I wouldn't have been h...

Re: What's on your work bench?
I made this router sled over the last few weeks. Cost about 20% of an actual sled. $250 all up using bits n bobs. Nice work G! Where did you source the linear bearings and rails from? https://www.trademe.co.nz/home-living/cleaning-bins/vacuum-cleaners/other/auction-4909271426.htm This guy - a pleas...

Re: What's on your work bench?
Cleaned & setup this 2002 Epiphone Les Paul I got yesterday It's got stock 57CH(G) and HOTCH(G) epiphone pickups and a few minor cosmetic issues ie a lone screw for a strap lol. Not a big fan of the pickups so far, but got it for a bargain so can't complain. Everything else seems to be just fin...
