Yamaha SA30 - Ugly Duckling

The ugly duckling The ugly duckling had been exposed to heat or had been in a fire - I don't know but she was in desperate need of some TLC. So I have been working on this project for the last two and half months and have sort of finished it. There is always something that can be done nicer, better ...

Re: Hand cutting Paua inlays

Hi Taylor,

No never considered it but will keep it in mind. I prefer the real thing. Here a pic of the finished headstock. Guitar is all 'up and running' again. Looks real good in my opinion.

Cheers

Re: Hand cutting Paua inlays

Rebated the headstock for the letters. Not that easy and it is a little bit rough. Glued the letters in place, sanded the whole lot level and put a coat of polyurethane over it. This is the result. Looks better in real life. Fx - Inlays - SHOWING REBATED LETTERS ON HEADSTOCK - P1130050.JPG Cheers Sean

Re: Hand cutting Paua inlays

Thanks guys for your positive responses. I am going to try to get it fitted into the headstock this weekend... no room for mistakes. I had a quick skim on Trade me and you can buy sheets of it very thinnly cut with self adhesive backing Yes I know, I have some of that stuff and decided I prefer the ...

Re: Hand cutting Paua inlays

Hmmmm, patience he?

It took me about an hour per letter.... and they are not even set into the guitar....

I hate to think what the theoretical price for the restored guitar would have to be to recover my labour of 'love'...

Re: Hand cutting Paua inlays

As there is a 3 photo limit.... On to the letter H now... Fx - Inlays - Starting with letter H 05 - P1130007.JPG The letter M was not to hard, but I broke the letter Y twice and needed three shots at it. Once all letters were done I sanded the back off (NZ Simon - you are too quick, the post wasn't ...

Hand cutting Paua inlays

There appears to be nothing on this forum about creating one’s own inlays. Most guitars will have inlays cut by laser and router technology and therefore can be extremely complex and fancy. Adding bling does nothing to improve the sound and I much prefer basic inlays on any guitar. I wanted some inl...

Re: Cool restoration

Thanks guys. there are plenty of us home restorers out there I saw your "mickey mouse" restoration - impressive. Any word of advice regarding what glue to use for a plastic on wood binding. I did the top one with Araldite but sanding the excessive glue bits off is not easy as the glue dust...

Re: Cool restoration

Thanks guys for your positive responses. Not sure what
any more pictures to geek out at
means as I put quite a few pics up. As the project is not finished there will be many more pics to come...
Put it here anyway

Re: Cool restoration

Hey, I was too embarrassed to put it on this forum, as some of you appear to be sh*t hot restorers. I am only a simple dude giving it a go.... Have a look here:

Re: Cool restoration

Thanks for that. Fascinating, read the whole article. I'm restoring an old ('69 or so) Yamaha and my hours are increasing rapidly.
Still a long way to go, but hope to finish before Christmas.

Re: 1960's/70's Yamaha SA30

Questions sort of resolved in other thread.
Here's a pic of the 'dog' - hard to see the state she is on such a small picture... (Note the bone nut)
Once the 'dog' has turned into a princess I shall post a pic again. Several midnights will be required though...
Cheers
