Re: NZG - Nostalgia for Zee Gigs!
It was something of a coincidence - Random Samick on the forum was originally called 'The Dogs Bollix' after the pub, I used to spend a lot of time there... Then the "Random Samicks" play their first gig at the Bollix
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

I hear ya on that. Shitty demos recorded on a room mic that made their way to MySpace back when it was the peak of social media.jimi wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 3:00 pm I bought a reverb pedal off Mike on here in 2018. so he's been back and gone again.
I miss the original music scene from the early 2000's, bit of a lost era, back then we had our demos on MySpace, and I doubt many have made it over to Spotify or similar... not that I've looked.
Really loved the creative side of writing music and recording demos. Can't say I miss playing to 6 people and the bar staff at Galatos, Hysteria or the Kings Arms though.
That was my busiest period of gigging over a 5 year period between 2001-2006, but like you've said, they often weren't the highest quality. Worst was playing last at a show at the K Road Ball Room, final of 6 bands that night We went on around 1am and played to the last barman, the owner and a couple of random drunks

Yeah, that's pretty much how I remember most gigs going. The Scarecrow wrote: ↑Fri Jan 22, 2021 1:02 pm We went on around 1am and played to the last barman, the owner and a couple of random drunks
There was always that uncomfortable bit of negotiating around every gig where every band would be making their case of why they couldn't be last band of the night.
- have a guy coming to film it who can only be there from x to y
- have to go to be somewhere else at midnight, so we need to be done by then
and so on.

Re: NZG - Nostalgia for Zee Gigs!
Hah! That still happens. Most gigs I tend to play now are 3 bands max because of this. Some venues will only let you hire them until midnight or thereabouts which is good for limiting things to reasonable hours. I find the middle slot is usually the best on to play in because people are either 'fashionably' late or leave early. Most gigs I run I don't advertise the running order because I've seen it limit numbers as people will often only come to see their mates and leave other bands with the dead-venue vibes.jimi wrote: ↑Fri Jan 22, 2021 1:18 pmYeah, that's pretty much how I remember most gigs going. The Scarecrow wrote: ↑Fri Jan 22, 2021 1:02 pm We went on around 1am and played to the last barman, the owner and a couple of random drunks

Omg The Forum! For some reason I thought this was long gone, then I randomly saw it on a list of potentially toxic backlinks for another website, and here it is!
Good gig nostalgia poster there.

The only thing worse than playing to those six people is when you finish and they set up to play their set next.
