Well i got to see Iron Maiden play live...................and it was FUCKING AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Much like Rock2Wgtn the old school bands show everyone how it's supposed to be done. They were on form, bruce's voice kicks some serious ass. And the guitar playing! hell yeah!
I got there early with some mates to get a good spot. Had a jacket on which served me well as it rained through the opening acts, but got rather warm during maiden.
How the night went:
Chuganaut were first. Not really a band I'd get into being honest, but their playing was tight. And put some good energy into the show. they looked quite professional all round.
Lauren Harris. She was wearing a pair of really really tight vinyl pants. which brought on a few hilarious comments from some of the male crowdmembers. her guitarist was blonde and crazy looking with Antoine Dixon crazy eyes but with more mascara, and very Vai like guitar faces. Her bassist was a complete Nikki Sixx ripoff, exact same hair and even leather officers cap like Nikki used to wear. Really it was quite lightweight.
Maiden:
what can be said really. It was not as loud as I was expecting. I forgot my earplugs and was quite near the speakers, but am not deaf today like I usually would be.
Anyways, standard issue set that you see in their live performances. and FIREWORKS! yup squibs and flamepots abound. I'm not sure what else to say really. Everyone knows what to expect out of Maiden, a great show. There were some songs they missed that I would have loved to hear, but they got most of my favourites. I reckon I caught a few bum notes, could be wrong, but they looked like they were having a great time on stage. I couldn't actually see Nikko from where i was as his drumkit is HUGE. it looked like he could do a solo on toms and not hit the same one twice. and yes they did a full 13 min version of Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
Heres the setlist and a few pics.
0. Intro.Doctor Doctor/ Transylvania/Churchill's Speech
1. "Aces High"
2. "2 Minutes to Midnight"
3. "Wrathchild"
4. "Children of the Damned"
5. "Phantom of the Opera"
6. "The Trooper"
7. "Wasted Years"
8. "Rime of the Ancient Mariner"
9. "Powerslave"
10. "Run to the Hills"
11. "Fear of The Dark"
12. "Hallowed Be Thy Name"
13. "Iron Maiden"
Encore
14. "The Number of The Beast"
15. "The Evil That Men Do"
16. "Sanctuary"

I'm avoiding anything to do with the setlist (just skipped that bit in Darkness's post) but that quote above makes my heart sing because it means there's a better than 90% chance they're playing my fave Maiden song of all time which they didn't play in Melbourne last year.
One more sleep to go, can't wait!

Re: Scream for maiden AK and CHC...SCREAM FOR THEM !!!!
He played it on Children of the Damned- which Bruce sang so well that it almost bought a tear to my eye.
Amazing show, but I thought they would have played longer (They were on for less than 2 hrs including encores) , especially given that Bruce said earlier on that they were "going to play a lot of songs." They only played one song from Seventh Son. I would have loved to have heard Moonchild and the Clairvoyant instead of Sanctuary and the obligatory 'Iron Maiden.'
It's been said already, but Bruce's pipes were amazing. He sings better now than he did on Live After Death. In most of the songs he nailed all the notes from the studio versions. I think the only one where he went for a few lower alternatives was The Trooper.
Dave Murray's tone was a thing of great beauty; really nice throughout.
Adrian was barely audible for the most part
Janick played better than usual.
The outdoor acoustics weren't so flash. I would love to be going to the CHC gig to hear it indoors.
Overall, worth every penny. We got absolutely drenched, but completely forgot about it when the masters took the stage.

Re: Scream for maiden AK and CHC...SCREAM FOR THEM !!!!
For us guys in the west stand it was a 9/10 becuase they didn't consider us with the PA system.
Looking at the crowd on the pitch they looked to have a 11/10 gig. It was cool watching the crowd going off.
Awesome photo's posted there.
Ash eh? remembers every detail of every guitar played, including pickups. Obsession?
Got out of my car I parked at work on church street, my 13 year old nephew says "I can smell the bogans from here".
Any got some video from last night?

Everybody was really good to the opening acts.thehenderson wrote:Did people boo or chant during the opening acts?
Funny before the second act came on everybody was cheering thinking it was maiden hitting the stage.
She was pretty average.
Chuganaut had to carry all their own gear off stage to their bus.
Should have been my DSl up there, but he bought a brand new one, because I replied to the wrong email.
If all my pedals sold for $500, I'd go down to chch and see them again tomorrow.

Yeah, I was standing there for the first half grinning and thing "Fuck yeah, I'm at Iron Maiden!"darkness wrote:Well i got to see Iron Maiden play live...................and it was FUCKING AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!
...It was not as loud as I was expecting.
I even texted my mate in England with words to that effect. He had done the same when he saw them at Wembley.

I reckon the volume was just right. I was towards the back, to the left of the tower and there was enough space, not too loud, reasonable sound and I could see everyone from the knees up. (Not too worried about what shoes they were wearing). I tried to watch the stage as much as the screens. Seems wierd to go to a concert only to watch it on some big-ass TVs

Awesome pics, James!

Re: Scream for maiden AK and CHC...SCREAM FOR THEM !!!!
My sister said something about cheap flights for people with Iron Maiden tickets.
I can't find any info about it.
Man I thought I was off to Chch to see them all over again.
I've only got 300-400 bucks left after avery expensive last few days. Not quite enough. Buy my pedals today for $400.
Still trying to work out a way to get there cheap.
I remember jumping onto good trains for free ride south when I was a teenager.
Damn I want to go again!!

What time did Maiden hit the stage?
I'm trying to guestimate their stagetime for tomorrow night so my little kid doesn't have to come too early and just kick around (she's only 5 1/2 and the Mrs. has said she'll come down with her a little later than I get there)

Re: Scream for maiden AK and CHC...SCREAM FOR THEM !!!!
I'm not that good to play it all, but I did have a really good go at learning Run To The Hills last week and I can now play along to it all except the intro (can't nail those unison bends reliably yet) and the solo, at about 80% speed.Aquila Rosso wrote:Ha Ha, Warming up the DSL100 now to play last nights set list, yeah.

I'm very happy with that.
(and I also bought myself a Maple Neck MIM strat last week so I can even pretend to be Dave or Adrian, without hotrails of course)
