Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

Gah! Wish it wasn't on a weekday! I've seen him a couple of times. Well worth it both times.

Actually, it was very enlightening.Molly wrote:Aaaa, f'k it. Just phone them. The ones you need to see never come anyway.slowfingers wrote:CRAP!!!!!!!! Parent teacher evening.

Bugger.
Physics: Completely out of his depth and in awe of my son's ability to knock off a 100% test result with no preparation. (Worrying)
Maths: Totally relaxed about the externals, "Leo will do just fine" (Also worrying)
English: Possibly the most inspired and talented teacher I've ever met. He's responding well to her expectations in a subject he finds difficult. (That's more like it)
Chemistry: Knows her students and has specific advice for each on what to focus on. I'd listen to her all day because she's the perfect combination of all the things that make French women wonderful.
And she made me forget I was missing Tommy.

Physics. I'd need to get to the bottom of that. Sounds like he's not being given work that's at all challenging or he got the answers through a mate. Was the assessment in exam conditions? You can only individualise a course so far (even though many parents expect a totally personalised lesson for every one of the twenty-eight kids in front of you) but there should at the very least be extension work.slowfingers wrote:.
Next time ask what level he's being taught at (Curriculum level - not NCEA level). Take along a copy of the National Curriculum and read the level statements for that subject. Compare it to what he's actually doing. I've done this with my daughter. I don't get palmed-off with a positive report (the easiest way to placate most parents). If I don't see evidence of the appropriate level in her work I want to know how that decision is being made.
Keep an eye on his homework diary. If it's not being filled you should ask why.

Re: Tommy Emmanuel ticket offer ...
It's all kosher. He's in the top 10% of the GAT class in all but one subject. All his credits are Excellence apart from 2 Merits and he's got every one on offer. He certainly breezes through Physics but he can back it all up with knowledge. He's motivated and it all looks too good to be true. I'm just holding my breath and hoping the impending Girl experience doesn't distract him too much.Molly wrote:Keep an eye on his homework diary. What really bugs me is that his Mother's genes are obviously dominant, (PhD, head of a significant research project) I feel somewhat redundant.

I'd be so lucky. I became surplus to requirements 10 years ago. Now she keeps an unemployed architect insteadvintage52 wrote:I hearing "KEPT MAN" not redundant!slowfingers wrote:
