64th ruler
Hi all,
Can anyone advise where to get a quality imperial/metric metal ruler with 64ths of an inch measurements located at the tip?
I have tried Bunnings and Mitre 10 and they have 150mm (6") ones, but the 64ths are in the middle of the ruler, which is useless for measuring string height against the frets
Cheers

Re: 64th ruler
A proper engineering supplies store, like George Henry in christchurch would be your best bet, but you could of course do it properly and get some imperial feeler gauges and use those instead
measuring with a ruler would be HARD!

How can I be sure I'm here?

convert your measurements to metric and find something local or get one of these

That StewMac string action gauge looks the deal. Rather more accurate than my eyeometer...
I'm amazed that the yanks have allowed a metric implement in the country, though. Isn't that anti-american?

That's one of the jobs of the Freemasons - keep the metric system down [/Simpsons episode].Rog wrote:That StewMac string action gauge looks the deal. Rather more accurate than my eyeometer...

Wow - that StewMac thing looks great.
Question - do NZ luthiers work in metric or imperial? I ask, because everything you find on the net about setting up action etc talks about doing it around 4/64ths of an inch.

Metric metric metric.
I can work in both, but choose metric because imperial is for the science-impaired.

Mostly metric but as half the tools and resources are yanqui in origin, you have to deal with imperial as welllowslung wrote:Wow - that StewMac thing looks great.

BTW 4/64 * 25.4 = 1.5875 mm

I'm a keen user of the old fashioned eyeometer, but measuring action with one is a recipe for deception. Even after a couple of decades experience, I find it highly inconsistent thanks to the illusions generated by things like the distance between the string and the edge of the fretboard, the height of the frets, how shiny the frets are and whther the fretboard has binding or not. For example, action on an unbound fretboard with shiny extra-jumbo frets will always look higher than it is.

Funnily enough, I often work in both when I'm building anything.ash wrote:Metric metric metric.

If its 2642mm for instance, then its easier to remember 104" ...

Re: 64th ruler
for action, I tend to use the old feel-o-meter, much more accurate than the eye-o-meter
I work in both imperial and metric, no worries there as we did both when I was serving my apprenticeship. Can't remember the thickness of a line on a rule now, think it was 15 thou or something, so in theory you can work to 7 1/2 thou with a rule. Used to know the thickness of a fag paper and the cardboard from a fag packet too, comes in handy when you're stuck on a crane 70m in the air and you've forgotten your feeler gauges. Ah the good old days..... when I was a lad etc bore blah bore blah blah blah this was all fields

Its not enough that we succeed, we still need others to fail
Re: 64th ruler
Occasionally I think my strings are thicker in some points than others, then realise it's just the fret markers reflecting off the string.ash wrote:Rog wrote:Rather more accurate than my eyeometer...

Ok I got rid of my Foal quote, but I found a new one.
