If you are wanting your guitar to sound like a strat then don't bother. First, I don't think if you put a strat single coil into a (say) gibson that it would sound like a strat - different scale lengths, woods, etc. Secondly, the split bucker just doesn't sound like a strat.

What it does do is give you a different, single coil rather than humbucker, sound. That comes with serious volume differences too, so that can be an issue to work with. If that's what you are after - eg: to play a nice jangly clean part with the same guitar - then great. But don't set your expectations too high or they'll be missed.
Oh yarrr, totally not expecting it to sound exactly like a strat, I just associate them with a clean single coilesque sound :) I have hardly ever played any single coils so don't really know what to expect

Some humbuckers sound great when tapped. One of the things I really like about having the option is that it's a bit like having a clean/dirty switch on the guitar. I reckon it's definitely worth trying.

I used to have a Dimarzio Paf Pro that sounded great coil tapped. Not like a Strat mind you (it was in the neck position of a cheap Epi LP) but still very nice.

Something I quite like is actually switching the humbucker coils from series to parallel on my guitar... Gives a single coil sound but still retains the character of the pickup somewhat. Nothing wrong with taps tho, just sounds different... particularly nice on the neck pup

Yes. I have a HSH five position set up with front H, split front/S, S, split rear/S, rear H. I use the positions as much for tone as for extra distortion/boost. Very handy!

Having a clean/dirty switch must surely appeal to JB.

Why? He'd only use half of it.

The label would tell him which half it was.

Anyways with the impending arrival of my new body I reckon I will get a super 5 way (ooooerrr) and do the following:

Bridge Hum - Bridge Inner Coil - Bridge Hum + Neck Hum - Bridge Outer Coil - Neck Hum

Neck is a single conductor SD '59 so no split options :)

4-pole Super switches are too big to fit in a tele control slot.
