It's called a "Fat Finger" apparently..
Has anyone seen/tried this thing - does it actually work?? or is it much akin to fitting brass soles to one's shoes perhaps..

It only works if there is a problem to start with. Like it says in the description about the Jazz bass problem, it can move dead notes to a different pitch where you don't notice them. While it can increase sustain and even out dead spots, it does so at the expense of harmonics and a lively sound.

The fact that some machinehead manufacturers go to great lengths to provide lightweight bass tuners suggests adding weight is not always the answer.

G-clamps are cheaper anyway. Plus you can use them to clamp things.

I suppose clamping my Dunlop Trigger Capo on the headstock of my guitar or bass will have the same effect as the g-clamp??? :)

Yes, to some extent. Its probably not as heavy though. Good for holding a fake cigarrette so that you look all cool and shit like Slash.

OTOH, I've carefully found basses which are at balance on the front straplock. I don't want a neck-heavy instrument.
