Where are the singers?

Post by werdna »

How hard can it be to find a singer? This was my innocent thought, a year ago, as I set out to complete our band.

Our band plays sleazy blues rock covers, including plenty of GnR, Slash, Velvet Revolver, Aerosmith and Motley Crue, as well as RHCP, Foos and Audioslave. The material is tasteful. We play the music faithfully. It sounds tight and awesome. We are ready to gig.

Out there in the teaming ant hill of humanity, in all its weird and varied forms, you would expect to find at least one musical sleaze merchant who can howl like a tom cat and roar like a lion. Someone with a great voice, dying to get out there and find some musical acolytes to make rock music.

Yet we have been looking for a year and have not found anyone willing or able to be the fifth instrument that we need. We have replied to every Rock Shop classified ad, without finding anyone. I have asked friends. I even watch an excruciating episode of New Zealand's Got Talent, a spectacle so unpleasant that during the second half I wanted to gouge out my eyeballs with a teaspoon.

These talented people with their great voices exist, but how are they found? Are we seeking the impossible? Is there noone with the courage to front a band and a vocal range like Axl Rose? Or is that someone a rare genetic variant, like a white gorilla, the Elephant Man or hermaphrodites?

Yours in desperation...

Why don't you do it? :)

I can't howl or roar, but that doesn't stop me filling the role.

This all sounds very familiar. Went through this a few years back. Awful business.

Yep. I saw him in Korea. He is no longer that svelte dancing maniac.
He hit a chord that rocked the spinet and disappeared into the infinite ...

Leo is the man, don't be hating on him. He was a master with lyrics.

Fuzzy afro and clown make up just made me want to hit him though.

I sing in a band, and I belt out some good old rock n roll, proper R n B as well as the more modern pop stuff. Finding a singer is tough, but as a singer, finding a band can be just as tough! I've answered ads, sent biog's but I've discovered that 43 is now considered to be too old!! The biggest pain in the proverbial though? The bands want a sound-a-like! Now that's fine if you're a tribute act, but if you're a rock covers band that play everyone from AC/DC to Zep, it becomes a vocal nightmare! Not that I'm saying your band is any of the above!

Point out to them that Brian Johnson joined ACDC at what, 40? Late 30s?

I know, the funniest feedback I've had recently was, "wow you're like an older Miles Kennedy" to which I replied "I think I'm like 6 weeks older than him" I was then instantly whisked into a scene from Wayne's World. "No Waaaaay"
I felt even older and left to quietly weep in my car.
