Wanted: guitarist for surf rock / quirky/retro outfit
It is with much sadness that our talented and loveable bull kelp surfer Bender has taken an indefinite leave of absence from live gig duties.
Bender will very much remain involved with recording, lighter gigs and manatee herding.
We have upcoming shows booked, including the Beach Hop and invite expressions of interest for a second guitarist to share lead/rhythm parts.
We are a dedicated 60s inspired surf guitar band, so we play a lot of the classic instrumental reverb drenched surf tunes. More recently we have expanded into a range off oddities including calypso and some other retro covers.
The ideal applicant would be Auckland or Northland based, have an interest in vintage gear/sounds and be able to get up to speed with a set list of 40-50 tunes.
Requires a fair bit of playful 'musicality' for want of a better word. We have a lot of fun and ham it up as much as possible.
So if there is anyone out there sitting at home disking with their reverb springs and adjusting the jag/JM tremolo so it's 'just so' then flick me a DM.
Thanks

Sad to read this, you guys are quite the institution. I hope Ben is ok.
I get my reverb from Neunaber, which I think rules me out. And I'm more likely to be tweaking a Kemper than a JM trem! Still, I hope you find another soulmate and can keep gigging.

I’m ok- just reached a point where gigging isn’t really compatible with working as a film/tv sound mixer.olegmcnoleg wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 8:45 am Sad to read this, you guys are quite the institution. I hope Ben is ok.

I am 100% happy to lend my springs to any interested parties. Possibly even a blonde fender amp too!

I should also add that this has easily been the most fun and rewarding band I’ve ever played in. By a wide margin. Anyone who joins up is in for a treat.

I'd love to.
But there's some impediments.
I'm too old.
I'm nowhere near pretty enough.
There's no way I could fit Ben's shirt.
That picking hand tremolo thing defeats me.
And the absolute killer:
I play Telecasters.
Good luck guys; this would be an amazing band to be a part of.

"We were playing so loud that just one note on the guitar was sufficient".
Ritchie Blackmore.

I love the idea, but am busy learning 40 songs for another project.
Re Slowy - I didn't know that telecasters are not surf guitars. I have a gold flake telecaster that looks the part.

Hmm, I might be perfect...StrummersOfThunder wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 8:18 am

Requires a fair bit of playful 'drunkenness and musical incompetence' for want of a better word. We have a lot of ham.
So if there is anyone out there sitting at home drinking with their reverb springs and adjusting the jag/JM tremolo so it's 'vaguely right' then flick me a DM.
Thanks

Basically the entire Cannibal Corpse back catalog, shouldn't be hard to find on YouTube!

Re: Wanted: guitarist for surf rock / quirky calypso outfit
Try this on for size. Should give you an idea of the sort of stuff.
Miserlou (Dick Dale)
Cafe Baghdad (The Kileuaeas)
Invasion of the reverb Snatchers (The bambi molesters )
Cecelia Anne (Surf tones/ pixies)
Casbah (los straightjackets)
Pipeline
Bombora (The Atlantics)
Journey to the Stars (The Fathoms cover)
Dead man surfing (phantom frank )
Rock lobster (b52s)
Caravan (Laila and the cosmonauts)
Camel ride (The Langhorns)
Comanche (The revels )
Plus a whole bunch of quirky surf covers of non surf songs, some calypso stuff.

Very cool!!
I play the ventures to backing tracks daily.
But that's about it... couldn't imagine a whole set, would take some serious skill
Would love to see your shows when you're up and running again
