Whats a good mic for a bass? would the heil manage it? the stats say it picks up from 40hz which to me suggests it would do the job.

For recording a bass amp check out the Heil PR40 instead - it's more suited for the bottom end.
Of course for the sake of definition I always combine it with a DI as well, so a quality DI box like Radial etc would really help.
