Recording setups

Post by offender »

It would be good to know what people have for their home recording.

I basically have the following

Guitar: Guitar -> Vox AD30 -> Microphone -> SB Audigy 2ZS -> Audacity
Backing track: mp3 or MIDI format on the PC through Windows Media Player
Mixer: Audacity producing a master WAV & then later a compressed MP3.

I have got my second guitar plugged into the Line-in port & use Amplitube for some late night jams but I've never tried to record this (not sure if Audacity will be able to record what amplitube produces?)

Guitar --> Peavey XXX --> Behringer C1 Condenser Mic and Audix Dynamic Mic---> Tascam US-122 Interface ---> Adobe Audition or Ableton Live

Or, if my boyfriend is having a sulk about the noise...

Guitar --> Digitech RP100 Pedal --> Into Line In on Tascam USB 122 Interface --> Adobe Audition or Ableton Live.

For Midi I use a Ediroll PCR-M30 controller keyboard, and either Reason, or Ableton Live with various Plug-ins.

Choice of guitars/bass --> MOFO Pedalboard --> Pod XT --> Cubase SX with many plug-ins

or

Choice of guitars/bass --> MOFO Pedalboard --> Choice of amps --> crap mic --> Pod XT on clean preamp setting --> Cubase SX with many plug-ins

or

Choice of guitars/bass --> Pod XT on clean preamp setting --> NI Guitar Rig 2 --> Cubase SX with many plug-ins

Very rarely use my soundcard input (Audigy 2) as USB interface in Pod XT is much cleaner

So far I've used Hammerhead and Fruity Loops for drums, Audacity and Sony Acid for multi-track recording, onboard soundcard and now a Maya44 soundcard, Zoom GM200 and/or Marshall DSL201 DI'd or miked. Other than the fact that I'm also too crap to record, it hasn't worked out to well so far.

The setup in my son's room (our winter studio):

Guitar/Bass/Keyboard/Roland TD-6K Electronic drums -> Boss BX-80 Mixer -> Creative Live! Soundcard -> Acid/Cakewalk Home

I'm building another setup in the garage. It'll essentially be the same except that I'll be using a Boss BX 12 channel mixer, and Cakewalk (Sonar most probably).

I'm procrastinating (as usual) .. will using a projector instead of a monitor get rid of the noise problem?

I've got an emac running protools LE 7.

I have the automated mixer 002 hardware thing

I havn't recorded anything seriously for a while, but always just used my 57 for guitar, bass and vocals. Drummers always tend to have those cheapo shure drum mic kits that can be good

As far as I can see, it's all about recording in a nice sounding room.

I use a BOSS BR-532 digital recording studio.
I just plug the guitar/mic in and record directly to memory card. Then chuck the wav file sonto my computer and poke around with them in Adobe Audition.

BG, how do you rate the POD-XT? I was thinking of switching to one.

Joe Meek mq3 preamp into EMU0404 sound card. Using sonar5 , studio projects b1 mics, and I d.i guitars / bass then use vst plugins for the amp sounds.

I love my XT - only for practicing/recording though :) having a USB interface certainly helps...

At the moment: Cheap cardoid mic for vocals, DI'ed BXR300c for bass, and a DI'ed a GT8 for guitar, into a Behringer desk, into an Audiophile card, running Cubase SE.
The actual recording side of things is very good... it makes you work much harder on the playing/singing aspect, and removes any delusions about how easy it is(nt) to produce a good recording. :roll:

Just about to update the mic/desk/soundcard along with some nearfield monitors. Decided to get more serious about this.

God I'm primitive in comparison - Guitar/bass/ to guitar amp then line out and drum/ vocal mike to acoustic amp- line out to tascam X25 4 track - final mixdown to cd burner.

Use all sorts of tricks to improve things like ping ponging bass/drums then multiple vocals down to one track - uusally add guitars etc last.
You can't do THAT on stage!

Subsidiary question - what do people think of those 8 track HD recorders with virtual tracks etc. Worth the extra effort/cash or better to go to computer with dedicated software/good soundcard????? (am thinking of moving up soon).
