Over the Rainbow

I'm planning a 2nd - and different - version of this as well, but this was the first to be done.

I think that might be one of the coolest pieces you have posted mate 8) Very enjoyable, I can even ignore the jazz at the start ;)

Yea, I like it. A nice way to start the day. You have a great touch. Plenty of cool voicings on that, who was the influence?

Cheers guys. 8) It's rather different for me, but I think getting me started along a path of learning/arranging more like this.

Darcy, I pretty much winged it. ;) Mainly it was a case of "where's the melody note? What do I want in the bass? what shape/inversion of the basic chord would that be? If I play that (or part of it) are there any open strings I can bring in?"

I did reharmonise it slightly; where the lyric goes "...Over the Rainbow" the original is Em (the iii of Cmajor) but I played an F(sus2). Since the melody note is a B, it implies a maj7#11 - dissonant but prettily so, and rather wistful/longing I think.

As far as 'an' influence I couldn't say. I guess Chet Atkins was in my head - but I've only ever heard about 3 songs by him (one in fact being Over the Rainbow done with Les Paul playing the melody) - and they're really not much like this turned out. - So that doesn't really make any sense :P

Cool, very cool harmonies and, um  okay, wistful, can't think of a better word now  and good feel with the timing, streetching in all the right places.
What was the axe?
Very dynamic recording, a little too dynamic for my poor computer, but to my ears a little dynamics is better than too much compression...
Tin arse!!

I was thinking Tommy too, and we all know how much of an influence Chet was on his playing. Tommy has a very "happy" bright approach to his playing though. It really is a joy to hear.

Tuck Andress is another one to check out. He was a huge influence on my brother early on in his career. Thanks to the wonders of youtube:

Tuck Andress solo guitar - Over the Rainbow, at Jazz Paris Festival 2006

He even moves off mid-flight into another song from the movie! Damn, the old men have it going on!

Oh, I saw a documentary on the writer a few years back. This song was almost actually cut from the movie! It was in a scene that the studio thought was too slow or something. Thank goodness they had their minds changed!

Gotta love the internet! Here's the whole story:

What a great song. You did it justice too might I add. Well done Tsuken! 8)

Wow - loved Tommy Emmanuel's version. :D

I was expecting to like Tuck Andress' as well, but i stopped the vid after the first couple verses, as the song seemed to be lost. The irony is not lost on me, but I think there was too much flash. ;) TE was borderline "look at the cool things I can do", but TA was just overboard. I found it impressive, but not enjoyable. By contrast what I have heard of Chet Atkins never sounds like being clever is the goal; it just sounds lovely - and in fact, clever 8)

Tuck really kicks it up a gear around the 3 minute mark. Anyway, he's still one of my favourites. He's such a humble guy and a genius player. Hey, check this out:

Damn, there goes that Hendrix buzz again. I seem to be drawn to Jimi's music...

Missed this...

It was the same guitar I spend 95% of my playing time on now 8) My Ash "mostly-custom" Catherine on the middle pickup.

What it really brought home to me was that I want an archtop. I really really want an archtop.

I did exactly the same thing. And I agree with the rest of what you said. :)
