Bass whinge - Brother cooking bass in car

Post by Jump13 »

So I need to vent...

I purchased a JMJ mustang over in Perth in early December and my brother is supposed to be shipping to me.
Unfortunately, he has been really unreliable, which has me regretting this decision. haha

He keeps forgetting to take it DHL as requested to ship it. What was most concerning is the first time he put it in his car intending to drop it off but forgot about it leaving it in his truck while he went into his office for the day. So I hate to think how hot it was inside his vehicle for several hours of the day.

I know extremes of temperature can warp the wood etc, so Im a little concerned about what state I'm going to receive it in when it finally gets here. It was boxed up for shipping so in a solid gig bag surrounded by foam in a cardboard box for shipping. So it would have some insulation against the temperature - I hope.

I've advised him he cant to that again as it might cause damage. Here's hoping it arrives OK soon.

Has anyone had experience with instruments affected by extreme temperature? Am I over-reacting?

It's not a problem until it's a problem and there's not much you can do until it's here.

Don't sweat it. One thing at a time.

Now now don’t panic. I didn’t get to where I am (Reggie) by not having my sight unseen bass guitar custom roasted in a wagon by my unreliable brother at some point !

Imagine if you opened the case and it had melted into a strat tho…

It's probably not the best for it if you can avoid it but it could also experience some big temperature shifts anyway during the shipping process.

I'd be more worried about someone spotting it in the car and breaking in to steal it.

Mate of mine had to go to hospital in a hurry one time.

He had just unstrung his Cole Clark.

He left the Cole Clark sitting on it's stand.

When he returned 2 and a half weeks later, he restrung the guitar only to have some terrible buzzing as the neck had moved quite a bit.

I told him not to panic, leave the guitar for a couple of days and "live" as normal.

The neck came back to where it should be having sat with the tension on.

True. That may be a bigger worry!

This for sure. Bought a guitar that was collection only in Wellie some years ago, which I got my then-teenage cousin to collect as it was a few km from where he lived and he was coming up to go to Laneway with his girl of the time. They were bunking with me for a few days so all worked out, aside from the fact that they left the guitar on top of the parcel tray of her car (early 90's Familia) in full view of the sun for the duration of the trip which included an extended stay in Taupo for a few hours. It was only a cheap-ish Ibanez RGA I was buying as a backup shredder but the worst part was that the guy offered them a free soft case for it to transport but cuz declined it as he though he'd have to rearrange the car to fit ... so instead, it sat on display from Lower Hutt > Auckland. Worst part? Finding out that the passenger door didn't lock so it was probably an easy pinch for the right/wrong person. I suppose I can't complain much, I played it, didn't like it much and sold it for more than than I paid
