6 string basses

Post by Bg »

had a play around with one last night, it was like trying to fret on a cricket bat. Anybody got big enough hands to play these?
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

I imagine I would, but I'd really like a go on a Fender Bass VI, those things look very cool (although prohibitively expensive).

The Bass VI is a strange animal. Bass players don't want a bar of it and neither do guitarists. Its a bastard cousin that is doomed to forever be an orphan...

Six string basses are almost a totally different instrument to both guitars and bass guitars. You need to play with a classical style hand form to get the most out of them (thumb on the back of the neck, high body position).
That really doesn't suit me personally as I tend to hold the neck like a bat.

Listen to Les Claypool in Primus to get a good idea of just how different a 6 sting bass can be...

I've just bought a 6 string, and I agree that the only way to play it is in the classical style, pivoting off the thumb in the centre of the neck.

It'll take a bit of getting used to I reckon, but thats all part of the fun.

i would have an 8 string more in the similar configuration of the 12 string guitar concept.

anything more than 4 shouldnt be a bass.
