Scallops
On the video for 'Children Of The Grave' by Black Sabbath (looks like some MTV concert one), the bass player's instrument has scallops -- but only on the ones closest to the pickups. (I don't know what that end of the fretboard is called.) The majority of them (including the headstock end) are normal, flat frets.
Why would frets close to the pickups on a bass have scallops carved into them?

Hurdy Gurdy.... some how... and I'm not entirely certain how mind you, an instrument that sounds like someone has shoved a nest of angry hornets into a goose with a kazoo bill and is randomly slapping the poor creature with an accordion.... Sounds amazing.

Re: Scallops
I think it's to get a better grip on the high thin strings.
Billy Sheehan (minor bass player of some repute) has the top two strings D G scalloped above the 17th fret.

Re: Scallops
often the frets themselves are thinner/smaller too, supposedly for intonation purposes
Sheehan got the idea off Yngwie... Talas opened for them in '85 apparently.

Actually Geezer was a guitarist who had to think he was a bass player when Tony Iommi made it clear there would be only one guitar player in his band.mr_sooty wrote:Helps for bending those high notes. Especially useful for bass players who think they're lead guitarists.

Re: Scallops
the story of how it was made is interesting writes Bass Nerd. Sheehan started with a new '69 Precision and modified it with so much vigor that it actually turned into a Yamahathehenderson wrote:AH MY EYES THAT GREEN BASS IS WANG
