Cheap bass for home use - recommendations please

I use a Squire Jazz in my band and it's great. You can get really modern tones with it, heaps of different options. I would highly recommend one, mine cost 300 second hand. I use it to play shows and record with too, it's very reliable and sounds/feels great. Squire have some pretty high qulaity basses in my opinion.

I'd agree with you there. The ones we have in stock are really cool basses.

I third the Squire Jazz - set it up properly (or take it to someone who can) and string it up with some nice strings and you have a nice sounding and playing bass on your hands. I started on a GSR200FM (still my cheap, fool-around bass) and it stands the test of time and experience as well - even though I now own a '76 Ric 4001, I still pick it up every now and again.
