Got a space for a double bass? (akl-wel)

Post by Karlmalised »

Hey guys,
I recently bought a new double bass, and the first one they sent me got damaged in shipping. Im not too confident in the ability of the seller or shipping company now, so i was wondering if anyone is driving from auckland to wellington in the next week or so who could bring it down. I know it's a big ask, but I'm happy to compensate for your time and effort :)
Cheers,
Karl

Good luck with that mate, yeah I'd LOVE to own a double bass, can I ask what brand is it etc, how much$$? or is that rude? the thing is you pretty much need to use a van as a hard case for one of these lovely things... its on my bucket list, that and a ducati 900 supersport and a handgun for some reason something stupid like a 357 or a 44 magnum, just for the hell of it... :mental:

Everyone I've asked says a station wagon is big enough, you wouldn't need a proper van.

I have used John - A-H Freight 0800 434 654 to ship a couple of Double basses around the country. No guarantees, but he is a fragile freight mover (usually quality furniture, etc) and also he loads and unloads it himself, so you're not at the mercy of a random depot muscleman.
Never had any issues, and he seems an on-to-it sort of guy, so you can explain how you want it shipped. Reasonable rates too.
You will need a pickup and dropoff with truck access tho. Last time I sent one to Welly it was pickup up from his depot.

Good luck. Double basses are great, it's a pity they are so expensive to get even a beginner level one.
By the way, if you buy some of the low-cost asian beginner models, allow at least a few hundred to get them properly set up. I have bought a few, they all needed 5-6 hours work to get them from 'assembled-and-making-a-noise' to 'playable-and-enjoyable'.

Not helpful, but a little anecdote, when I bought my cello, I had to get it shipped from down south, and couldn't afford a hardcase (600-800!!) so I had the courier pick it up in it's canvas soft cover.

Couple days later a full size semi truck stops in my street, blocking like 10 driveways, and out hops the driver, with said Cello. He was a little bit concerned that it would get damaged, so he had put it in the cab and personally delivered it on his normal freight delivery to the Wairapapa rather than trust it to the depot and local courier vans. Epic service from Fastway Couriers.

I first read that as the driver saying "Cello" (accented to rhyme with "hello").

I should know by now not to expect wit from couriers.
