Greatly prefer passive for this reason.
Vibe with this hard.

I wish the GZR PJ was just a P for this exact situation.

Often think about swapping it for a P actually.

I’m in the market for a custom Bilt, Novo or USA Lakland and really want simple passive. Then I start thinking about a vintage P bass and get all confused. They already made the perfect bass!

I use my vol and tone a fair bit but what I’d suggest is actually a 3 way switch for a PJ with master tone and volume.

I’ve never seen the point in blending, some people must have golden ears to hear when the bridge gets blended in. I much prefer P / P+ J / J. Having the switch also means that in the solo positions there’s no loading from the other pickup so it’s more “pure”.

I converted my Lakland GZR PJ to have a 3 way rotary so it still looks like it has 3 knobs but a normal 3 way Gibson style would probably work better.

I ripped the active gubbins out of mine, sounded so much better in passive mode…

Interesting chat you are having. How would you describe the difference in sound between a P and a J?

What applications, genres?, apply?

Lastly, what songs best demonstrate each one in their unfiltered glory?

I wouldn’t dismiss active electronics out of hand

Steinberger, Tobias, Ernie Ball are all excellent

In general terms a budget Bass the weak point will be the electronics

Is the standard precision pickup position considered a neck position?

No

But on a P/J yes

Let’s not start on 60/70 Jazz bridge pick up placement

Never use the tone on the P

On the Jazz Basses hardly ever but on the Fretless now a touch as it seems to suit the GHS Flats.

Why?
I always use old flats on the P and tend to record with Valve Amps

It’s a familiar, warm and full sound

The Jazz for gigging is lighter plus thinner neck and in general terms easier to EQ. Plus with a Sadowsky outboard it’s easy
