Favourite basses

Post by Timi »

I won't do a least favourite this time, theres too many of them.

My favourites
Fender Jazz (passive only)
Fender Precision (passive only)
G&L L2000 (on passive mode)
G&L SB1
Gibson Grabber
Gibson Ripper
Musicman Stingray (love the look and feel, but dont like the tone)
Rickenbacker 4003

If you could only have one bass what would it be?
Three weeks ago it would have been a G&L, but now its Ric.

What would everyone else choose?

alot of people hate the sound of them thumping
but I like the SG basses, a good comfy shape
and the sound is fine, to my ears anyway

in terms of sound, I think jazz basses are ace
they cover a good range of sounds but still have that
differentish tone, in comparison to the P bass

although I don't know poo from fudge

MIC OLP Musicman 4 string
MIK ESP LTD B-205 5-string Active
MIJ Ibanez SDGR Custom 5 String Fretless Active
MIK Hohner Steinberger copy

An ASH built 4 string neck thru Jazz/Ibanez Musician bass. I've been procrastinating and Adrian has been busy busy busy.

What I have:
MIJ Jazz with SD Quarter Pounders
ASH Bass VI Baritone

With unlimited budget I'd add:
Musicman Stingray
Ric 4003 (one of these was on the wall 2nd hand when I bought my jazz. It was almost mine, but the allure of shiney new photoflame fender was too much (I knew nothing of the whole MIA MIJ MIM thing back then). If I new back then what I know now ....
Gibson thunderbird, in white just cos they look so cool.

I'd also like to have a 5 string and a 4 string unlined fretless just because, havent really put any thought into model as its all just a pipe dream really.

Was a little over a grand. This was 12 years ago when I had just received my student loan and the only basses I had ever played were a couple of old Ibanezes and a nameless P Bass copy.

Fender P Bass
Hohner 'The Jack'

Not keen on
MIJ Fender Jazz, just never felt right
Ibanez Soundgear SDGR800 or something... never felt right and too many controls, sounded rubbish when the battery started to die...
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

I've tried most, but always come home to my Fenders. Some lasted longer than others, but the Fenders always just sounded 'right' for me.
He hit a chord that rocked the spinet and disappeared into the infinite ...

I'm addicted to my P Basses & my J Basses.
Basses that I've had & missed?

Aria SB1000 (The John Taylor thingy). Sold it in England to buy...............................Wal Custom (why did I sell it, why why why?) temporary insanity.
Rickenbacker 4001 v63 reissue sold it to buy another Jazz which I love, but this Ricky was very nice indeed
I climbed on the back of a giant albatross which flew through a crack in the cloud to a place where happiness reigned all year round and music played ever so loudly

I really really liked this blue Warwick Fortress Masterman they had in the RS in the mid '90s. I stopped in and played it ALOT for a year or so. I really like the Ibanez SRP400 at the other end of the spectrum. Needs a decent pickup, but it makes a great P-bass sound with a Jazz bass feel and un-clunky looks.

RP's Bass VI is a different animal, same with the Schecter Hellcat VI. I'm definetly building one of those for myself one day.
