Yeah, I'm not sure either. It always makes me think of fried chicken.
It's a pretty difficult thing to quantify- a less kind term might be 'throwback'. It seems to be able to cover any genre from jazz to reggae.
In the context of this thread, Vince's fried chicken comment is bang on the money.
Brother Dege - brilliant. Picture of the resonator got me interested. Had a listen to the YT track, looked at his website, now listening to the albums on Spotify. Resonator, slide, and blues - doesn't get much better!

That's kind of how I see it.. it can be any of the kind of 'traditional' genres and any blend of them. Mmmm fried chicken.
Not sure how I missed these guys but since listening to this I have been playing them non-stop and have bought most of their back catalogue. Really enjoyed Jason Isbell's solo work with the 400 unit as well. Thanks JB

Yeah I think I've pushed the truckers onto everyone I know over the last ten years.
The story behind that song is pretty cool.
"Mike Cooley wrote this one, based on a poem by his uncle Ed Cooley. Ed got to be there when we recorded it. Think he packed for a long evening of recording, but we'd been playing it live for a year or so and ended up nailing it in one take. Think Ed might have been a little disappointed by that."
Speaking of rootsy... How do you feel about T-Model Ford?
"Vince, have you ever tried playing an expensive bass?" - Polarbear.
"And isn't that the finest acoustic bass guitar feedback solo you've ever heard?" - Billy Moose.
