Tonight's the Night
Tired Eyes
Alabama
Southern Man
Down by the River
There is a story of how David Crosby met Neil Young for the first time, casually in the street in mid-60s LA, and Neil Young played him five songs on the guitar. Crosby says they were the best five songs he had ever heard.

Yeah me too... or rather, I don't like him at all. He's shit.Danger Mouse wrote:I generally don't like Neil Young, especially Hey, Hey, My My... but in the spirit of this thread, I LOVE Cinnamon Girl. When people talk about him being the Godfather of Grunge, I generally assume they are referring to this song in particular.
Discuss.

Re: Neil Young's best songs.
Anything off Harvest or Live Rust. I like his multi sided song writing...the sensitive folksy/country style through to the dirty rock. Have regularly gigged Hey hey and Hurricane, love them both, they are alot of fun to play around with. Wanting to add Rockin in the free world to our current set options. His Live Rust dirty guitar tone is one I really like, the combo of that LP and the Fender amp on the verge of meltdown is delicious. Check out his motorised amp controls if you want to find out more about his setup. Parently on Live Rust he had a reverb device under the stage hooked up to his mic stand or something like that. He has also done some electronic stuff too going way back. Ok thats enough.

For What It's Worth, we never listened to him in Our House, Down By The River, either. But there Comes A Time when you're in that Bad Fog of Loneliness and suddenly, on the radio comes Neil Young with This Old Guitar.
When that happens, I Ain't Got the Blues no more.
All the gear... absolutely no idea...

Pound for pound, a far better songwriter than Dylan. More interesting chord progressions, better production, and far more sophisticated and satisfying dynamics in the melodies and harmonies. Don't get me started on how overrated is Bob Dylan.

I was never a fan but I've started to warm to him lately... his book is very good too.

Re: Neil Young's best songs.
Love Neil. Seeing him with crazy horse is still one of the best gigs I've ever seen.
The Needle And The Damage Done, Tonight's the Night, World On a String, Everybody Knows this is Nowhere, Ramada Inn, Fuckin' Up, Mansion On The Hill, Love and Only Love, Powder Finger, Sleeps With Angels, Like a Hurricane, Walk Like a Giant and of course Rockin in The Free World. Played Rockin' at a couple gigs, always my favorite tune to solo on, and go full "Shakey" on it.

Does anybody else have the tribute album "The Bridge"? It has this great cover of Helpless by Nick Cave.

Re: Neil Young's best songs.
I blame this thread. I just primed the Ditto, dimed the Les Lius and thrashed out 20 minutes of Hurricane.
