Setzer and Cheney are indeed both awesome, and have much in common.

Pretty sure I put you on to him actually :p

back on topic, I rate Kurt Cobain.

I rate him, so that makes two of us. I've mostly heard him criticised for not being as awesome a lead player as he is a songwriter. I'm not sure there's room enough for that much talent in one dude.
But when he does play a solo it is very effective and melodic, rather than wank wank wank pentatonic box licks of doom following by huge pinch harmonic and wild vibrato... (yes Zakk Wylde I'm looking at you  )

You assume far too much, or perhaps too little about us, Rog
Yep, Setzer rules. And The Straycats played at the Powerstation in Auckland on Wednesday.

Ian Anderson fron Jethro Tull probably qualifies in the thread. Most people know him as the freaky hobo who plays the flute one legged, but he is an amazing acoustic guitar player. I like lots of JT stuff, but nothing more than the many acoustic songs that sit in the background behind the 'rock hits'. Look up Nursie, Life is a Long Song, Cheap Day Return, Mother Goose, Wond'ring Aloud etc...

Danger Mouse wrote: I'm almost ashamed to say this, but I really rate CC Deville too, not because he was technically that great, but for the kind of guitar playing required for Poison, he came up with some cool stuff.
you should be ashamed. yes, I'll give you his riffs worked but his lead was terrible.. but what would I know.. I'm not a guitarist.

no idea who any of them are, but any of the (many?) guitarists that played with alan parsons project. 'the voice' wah is hauntingly cool, and the lead work on some other time, again understatedly cool 8)

All the Zakk hate is interesting, he's the guy on all the guitar rag covers these days, but he's another one that's releasing the same album over and over - good thing I like it!

It was guys like him and EVH and Dime and a lot of the metal guys that seem to get all the love from the magazines that spurred me to start the thread. It could be easy as a young guy or gal starting out to miss out on a wealth of great players and their styles if you just looked at the names that come up most often.
