Pissing contet to see who can name the most obscure guitarist, perhaps?*
*disclaimer: I've got the flu, I've 3 days of proper working (for the first time in several years) and I may be a little grumpy and prone to sounding rude
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll spend thousands on fishing equipment he'll use for a bit, then get bored and move onto something else.
Charlie Parr. (TV's Vodafone ad with the guy folding up things onto his phone)
James Wilkinson. (NZ guitarist)
Kevin Borich. (NZ guitarist now in Aussie)
Dave Russell. (Ray Columbus' lead player)
Freddy Fenton. (Oamaru guitarist; plays at the penguin club infrequently)
Wally Bryson. (Raspberries)
Rick Brewster (Angels)
Ian Moss (Cold Chisel)
Bill Bailey (English comedian who is a virtuoso pianist with a wicked comedy routine; check out pootube...)
...Many many more who believe that less is more, and are able to let the song speak, rather than cover it with a blather of 64th notes...
There is no sort of aberrant behaviour that cannot be modified by use of the correct ammunition!

It was guys like him and EVH and Dime and a lot of the metal guys that seem to get all the love from the magazines that spurred me to start the thread. It could be easy as a young guy or gal starting out to miss out on a wealth of great players and their styles if you just looked at the names that come up most often.
Well, I don't hate Zakk. I like some of his work with Ozzy. I just can't take his macho style seriously. I gotta laugh at him. He sure can shred though.
There are a lot worse players to idolize than Dimebag. I wish I was into Pantera 10 years ago, man I'd be a very different guitarist now if that'd happened.

+1 +1 +1 +1 ...
Couldn't agree more.
He's underrated as a song writer too, but when you see them live he really is a good guitarist, and writes/plays lovely melodies. A nice guy as well, very humble by all accounts.
My top three bands, in no real order - Magnum, Maiden, Rush
Um, two of the guys that I rate that have gone back underground and get a lil dissed at times are:
Nuno & Richie Kotzen
The later gets more press because he doesnt get press
Some things about Richie Irk me.... but the dudes god mad skillz dawg!
oh...does anyone else rate Frank Gambale? that dues a monster..... some of his live solos and work with Chick Corea's band are simply jaw dropping imo.
Search user 'sweepfast' on youtube to check some of his awesome work.

Gambale the thunder from down under !
His sweep picking licks are from outer space or something, he's a freak. Amazing player. I just wish he switched to Valve amps sooner

If Bill Bailey is a virtuoso pianist ... any chance he played that crazy classical piano stuff on that particular episode of Black Books? I'm sure someone knows which one I'm talking about. If he did, wow.

Yeah, and that was an awesome episode. Actually, they all were...

Stanly Jordan anyone? well.. I know he's rated pretty highly in a nuber of circles.
How about Joe Diorio then, his playing is so deep, every note has feeling. While I dont and most likely will never play like him, he is still one of my favs.

Bill Bailey is just a talented musician fullstop, and bloody funny too
is it wrong to mention Jack White
i know he isnt exactly a technical player, and can be sloopy but to me he brings out the funness, and i like how he uses effects
Hurdy Gurdy.... some how... and I'm not entirely certain how mind you, an instrument that sounds like someone has shoved a nest of angry hornets into a goose with a kazoo bill and is randomly slapping the poor creature with an accordion.... Sounds amazing.
