DM did not have crap production values and I highly doubt Metallica do either (as far as they know)Different techniques maybe...

What are you comparing it to? Master of Puppets? Ride the Lightening? Black Album with all the synths?

After hearing all of the initial uproar about the limiting and lack of headroom on this albulm and how the Guitar Hero series was better, I grabbed both (only a few tracks from the latter) and A/B'd them on my reference monitors and there was nothing wrong with it.

Death fagnetic isn't all that bad, the clipping isn't as bad as everyone says about it. It's stands up well compared to st. Anger....

...and justice for all (Looooove it, but the lack of bass annoys me)
californication

Puppets/Lightening/Kill all have awesome production. Black album is soooooo slick.

I use And Justice For All as a lesson on how not to EQ for my students. There's no bass in the mix because the guitars occupy all that space. Why do they occupy that space? Because they scooped the mids out of the guitars to the point where there is nothing left of them in the freq range where they usually sit. It's also the reason the kick drum is heard as only a pitter patter. What were they thinking?

Another terrible one is Megadeth 'So Far So Good So What?' Some genius put copious amounts of reverb over the entire mix so it sounds like it was recorded in a cave; losing a lot of clarity and boosting an annoying treble frequency in the process.

It's hard to say who is responsible for these types of things. Is it the producer? Not necessarily. The producer isn't always present or in control when an album is mixed and mastered.

Yeah, black is just a tad too Bob Rock for me production wise but the music itself is great.

Lightning is the stand out for production style in my books... all things considered (time and technology among others.

But how do we know that it wasn't some jack-ass with sub par crap mastering skills being responsible for making the produce look like he had crap production values? it could happen....... quite easily.

Another one is Damn Yankees first album. It sounds really anemic; lacking bass big time.

Yngwie's 'Trilogy' album sounds pretty bad.

Soundgarden's 'Badmotorfinger' lacks mids and wears out your ears.

most of yous would probably say its crap production, but i like the sound of Sepulturas Schizophrenia album.
what are your thoughts on that album? to me its got a different sound
Hurdy Gurdy.... some how... and I'm not entirely certain how mind you, an instrument that sounds like someone has shoved a nest of angry hornets into a goose with a kazoo bill and is randomly slapping the poor creature with an accordion.... Sounds amazing.

That's what I like about it; I didn't realise they got that tone by scooping the mids though.

Along with the obvious answers (Californication, Death Magnetic), I always felt that Minutes To Midnight needed a lot more mastering (although that may also be the fairly raw sound showing LP's weaknesses as musicians) and Libertad is a lesson in how to overproduce.

Screw you guys - I like the way Badmotorfinger sounds.

Justice is a good example of an album I like that should sound alot better.

Achitects - Ruin - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIvxqZgpB-k

boring, flat sounding production, but an album I still listen to.

I love Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger but i agree about the production. Its probably the album that makes my ears ring the most at high volume. :(

Pretty much anything by Pantera.

Scooped mids of doom. Dimebag is the only one who could get away with such a tone.
